Anticipated Animal-And-Nature-Focused Trips During The 2012-2013 Academic Year
We are contemplating seven different trips during the 2012-2013 school year. Canisius students can use this information as they think about their own schedules, examine their budgets, and weigh the options. However, please note that this list is subject to change as the year progresses. As each opportunity firms up, signup sheets will be available in the ABEC Office (HSC303A).
Stellwagon Bank Whale Watch
Destination: Rockport, Massachusetts
When: Labor Day Weekend (three days) Aug 31-Sept 2, 2012.
What: Whale watch excursion off the coast of Massachusetts with goal of observing humpback whales and other cetacean species.

What: High altitude volcano rim (dormant), Tropical Rainforest Birding, Coral Reef Snorkeling, Humpback Whale Breeding Grounds.

What: Orangutans, Gibbons, Elephants as flagship species of tropical forests.

Manatee Ecology
Destination: Blue Springs State Park, Florida
When: President’s Holiday (five days) Feb 15-19, 2013
What: Observations of manatees, alligators and numerous bird species in central Florida riparian ecosystem. Snorkeling in fresh water springs.

Borderlands – Migratory Birds
Destination: Belize in Central America
When: Easter Break (nine days) Mar 28-Apr 7, 2013
What: Study of bird migration, with focus on critical role played by tropical forests in the lives of North American migrants. This study is continued on weekends during Spring semester, and is followed by five weeks of service teaching children at Iroquois National Wildlife Refuge in May-June 2013.

Destination: Lajuma Research Centre and Kruger Nat’l Park, South Africa
When: Summer Break (21 days) May 20-June 14, 2013
What: Field study of monkeys, and other highland wildlife endemic to the hill regions of South Africa. Kruger National Park for observations of additional wildlife species endemic to scrubland habitat.

Participation: Participation limited to 8 students. These field studies begin a three-credit course which will continue into the Fall-2013 semester.

When: Summer Break (21 days) May 20-June 14, 2013
