Men and Women for and with Others

St. Ignatius Loyola, the founder of the Society of Jesus, dedicated the Jesuits in service to the cities and the people who live there. In keeping with this Jesuit tradition, we believe it’s not enough to live in our community. We have a responsibility to help transform it for the good of others.

The Video Institute

Image of Barbara Irwin with student“East Side: A Community of Hope” is a 30-minute film produced by students in the Canisius Video
Institute. The documentary examines this struggling section of the city and the faith-based initiatives underway to help revitalize it. “East Side” is just one of 75 social documentaries and service-oriented videos produced by the award-winning Video Institute to help non-profit organizations and human-service agencies in the Buffalo region advance their missions. The Video Institute has made a positive impact on the lives of thousands of our neighbors in Western New York.

Institute for Autism Research

Image of kidsChildren diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder have an opportunity to participate in leading-edge treatment and research programs at the Institute for Autism Research (IAR) at Canisius. The institute’s summerMAX program was one of the first comprehensive treatment programs proven effective for children with high-functioning autism. The success of summerMAX is now the foundation for the IAR’s latest research, which tests the  effectiveness of its treatment program in school settings, a largely overlooked area of research. To date, more than 250 children in the Buffalo area have benefited from IAR services.

The Institute for Autism Research remains competitive  with national research institutions for grant funding. In 2013, the IAR received a $3.4 million research grant from the U.S. Department of Education Institute of Education Sciences – the largest research grant ever awarded to Canisius College.

Image of Kaji Sunwar in his store, Sagarmatha Groceries on Buffalo’s West Side.Kaji Sunwar’s dreams became a reality when he opened Sagarmatha Groceries on Buffalo’s West Side. A Bhutanese immigrant, Sunwar received assistance from Canisius Enactus students who designed the store’s business plan. Opened in 2012, Sagarmatha Groceries fills an important need for Buffalo’s nearly 2,000 Bhutanese refugees, who are unable to find their traditional foods in area grocery stores.

A student club, Enactus harnesses entrepreneurial opportunities to develop innovative projects that lead to sustainable change. Examples of this include programs whereby Canisius students teach Bhutanese refugee women to earn a living by sewing while caring for their children at home, and the Youth Entrepreneurship Showcase, which teaches future entrepreneurs basic business skills.
