Griff Beats

We are a community of beat-makers! Actually anyone who is passionate about MAKING their own electronic music is welcome! In Lyons Hall we have some nice facilities for basic audio recording, MIDI controllers and computers with music software installed. In this space DJ's use Ableton Live or Audacity software to create remixes. EDM (Electronic Dance Music) artists use synthesizers and samplers in conjunction with loop based-software such as Logic or Garageband. Students who have their own equipment or are familiar with using other techniques and software are encouraged to share with the group!

Fly Fishing

With two Great Lakes, their many tributaries, and inland streams, western New York offers many opportunities for anglers—from bass to pike to salmon to steelhead to several species of trout. One of the most exciting ways to chase these fish is with a fly rod and reel. Students will learn the basics of casting and fishing with a fly rod, as well as some of the entry-level skills of fly tying. Hopefully, as the year progresses we will, like the lead character in the Norman MacLean short story A River Runs Through It, find ourselves "haunted by water."

Note: A fly rod and reel will be required; waders and boots will be optional. We can help with a rod and reel package for roughly $150. You would need to purchase at least a one-day NYS fishing license for the days we go out together (about $5- $10 per day). We can help facilitate that purchase after we get started.

Soccer: The World Cup

With the World Cup of Soccer to take place in Brazil this summer, what could be better than spending your freshman year taking in all of the action from the world’s most watched sporting event? We will watch replays of games and discuss the performance of the great teams and players. Will Messi finally be crowned the best in history? Will Ronaldo’s impact lift Portugal? Can Spain repeat the success of 2010? What social and political issues marred the events in Brazil? Can they be overcome for the upcoming World Cup tournaments? In addition to these discussions, we’ll also be spending time on the pitch, kicking around the ball and improving our game.
