At Canisius, learning takes place beyond the classroom and textbook. Students have many opportunities for real-world experience that enriches their education, allows them to broaden their horizons and have positive influence in the community. These opportunities include:
- Internships – connecting students with employers in professional working environments. In many cases, students get a first chance at applying classroom learning and discussion to real-life situations. They build more than just their resumes – they also gain confidence and important networking opportunities that lead to success after graduation.
- Study Abroad – students who wish for a more global approach to learning can take advantage of our Study Abroad programs coordinated through the Office of International Student programs. By studying at their choice of European, Asian, Australian or Mexican colleges and universities, they can immerse themselves in foreign cultures while attending classes at world-renowned institutions.
- Research – students can assist our esteemed faculty in conducting research in a variety of disciplines. This gives students a chance to explore topics related to their coursework in additional real-world situations.
- Service-Learning – another unique learning opportunity is through service-learning, which is ideal for students who want to work with people in the community on broader issues and social injustices. The classroom is the community, and serving members of the community is a long-standing Jesuit ideal.
- Honors Program - the top students at Canisius are in this challenging and rewarding program of small, enriched classes and close faculty supervision.
- Urban Leadership Program - program for inner city students that uses team learning concepts to shape the leaders of tomorrow.
- Canisius Earning Excellence Program (CEEP) and Hughes Interdisciplinary Research Fellowships - more than just your average work-study jobs. These programs are more intellectually demanding and are closely related to a student's career or scholarly field.
