Who will advise my son/daughter?

Your son or daughter will meet his/her faculty advisor during summer orientation.  Students continue to meet with their advisors at least twice each semester during the freshman year, once to discuss progress reports from instructors, and once to discuss registration for the following semester.  In addition, students are encouraged to contact their advisors at any time during the year.  After the first year, students who have decided on a major are assigned a faculty member in their department as an advisor.  If they are undecided about a major, a member of the Student Advisement Center will advise the student until a major is chosen.

Are there any classes that all students are required to take?

All Canisius students take the following four courses:
ENG 101 - English Seminar I
ENG 102 - English Seminar II
RST 101 - Introduction to Religious Studies
PHI 101 - Introduction to Philosophy

In addition, all students fulfill the liberal arts course requirements of the Core Curriculum by selecting two courses from each of seven subject areas.  Some modification of these requirements is permitted depending upon the student’s major.  Click here for more information about the Core Curriculum.

What is the deadline for choosing a major?

Students who are undecided about a major after their first year are advised by the Office of Student Advisement.  Students are required to choose a major by the end of their sophomore year.  Canisius highly recommends that undecided students set up an appointment with a counselor in the Career Center to discuss potential career and major options.

Living on Campus

Where do freshman resident students live?

First year students live in one of three residence halls – Bosch Hall, Frisch Hall, or Dugan Hall.  Double rooms are available in Bosch and Frisch Halls and four-person suites are available in all three residence halls.  Canisius guarantees housing for all freshmen.  Click here for a look at our residence halls.  Once your son or daughter has paid his/her deposit, the next step will be to fill out the on-line housing preference form, available on the Accepted Students Homepage.

How are roommates assigned?

The Residence Life staff matches roommates based upon personal lifestyle preferences that the student provides on the housing preference form. If students request to be roomed together, the staff will make every effort to accommodate them.

Can freshmen resident students have a car on campus and where do they park?

Canisius College is one of very few colleges that allow freshmen resident students to keep cars on campus.  After purchasing a parking pass, students may park in various assigned lots around the campus.  While there is plenty of parking available, most freshmen will not be able to park next to their residence hall.  Best advice: Leave the car at home for the first year.

Safety at Canisius

<top>

What measures does Canisius take to make sure that students are safe?

The Canisius Public Safety Department protects the educational environment of the college.  They do this by providing 24-hour surveillance of the campus and surrounding area, offering a shuttle service to all students, utilizing blue light emergency phone systems and closed circuit TV all over the campus, limiting building access through a swipe card system, providing motorist assistance, and educating students about crime prevention.

Access to all residence halls is limited to residents of those buildings through a state of the art swipe card access system.  In the residence halls, at least one professional staff member is on duty 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.  By law all colleges are required to publish monthly crime statistics.  Click here for more information about Canisius crime statistics.

Who responds to emergencies?

Canisius Public Safety officers are “first-responders” for all fire, medical and criminal activity on campus.  All officers are trained in standard first aid, CPR and AED.  A recent review found that all emergency calls had a Public Safety officer at the location within 120 seconds. In addition, our urban location means easy access (within two blocks) to one of seven hospitals in the city of Buffalo.
