8-02-05   What are the Best Things About Canisius (part 1)?

Hi again!

Guess what?  Summer classes are over and I get to enjoy the last month of summer.  I am spending all of my time working for Admissions and for Residence Life.  Most of my residents have moved out and are home.  For those of us that are left, we are all just waiting to move into our housing assignments for the fall.  It has definitely gone by really fast!  I have been taking up any other spare time by either playing or working out for lacrosse, reading Harry Potter, or just enjoying a chance to relax.

I want to tell you a little bit about the coolest things about our campus.  The first thing I want to mention is Montante Cultural Center.  Wow!  This building is absolutely amazing.  Canisius bought it in 2000 and has taken an old church and made it into a beautiful multi-purpose performing center.  The stained glass windows and high ceilings make it seem so majestic that everyone that walks in there is always completely in awe.  Most of our major events on campus happen here.  There has been everything from the Mr. Canisius pageant (no—that is not a misprint—I do mean Mr.!!) to Hillary Clinton speaking there.  There have been comedians and hypnotists and other fun performers.  Our Canisius College Chorale performs here (which I am a part of and highly suggest getting involved with) as well as our band, orchestra, jazz ensemble, and other performing ensemble.  The music department has world renowned musicians come and give concerts here and I have even had a guest lecturer from Cal. Tech. come and talk to our chemistry classes about his research.  Needless to say, Montante is my favorite building on campus.

Next I want to mention my favorite aspect about our campus.  Our entire main campus is completely connected by a tunnel system.  And these tunnels are no underground caves that are dirty and scary to walk through.  These tunnels are completely finished off and have offices, meeting rooms, and even our health clinic in them.  Most clubs post flyers and posters regarding clubs and meetings or any other information in the tunnels so that students are always aware of what is going on.  It is nice because that makes it easy to get involved.  The freshman residence halls are actually connected right to the tunnels so you can always tell who the freshmen are in class.  They roll out of bed when it is 0ºF out and have on shorts and a t-shirt in class.  I was definitely one of those freshmen doing that a couple years ago!  I loved it and I took advantage of it for as long as I could!

There are a couple more really cool things about our campus, but you will have to wait for my next journal to hear more!  Hope you all are enjoying your summer and keeping cool!  Till next time…
