Canisius Welcomes Class of 2011

Canisius welcomed its second largest freshmen class in recent history with 847 new freshmen. The residence halls were teeming with life during Welcome Weekend as 72 percent of the incoming class moved in and started to explore their new home.

As a result of the overwhelming response to our admission offers for Fall 2007, reaching nearly 108 percent of our goal for new freshmen, we closed off fall admission earlier than ever before. This will translate into a slightly higher level of admission standards for students applying to enter Canisius in Fall 2008.  Students in a strong college-prep schedule senior year with a 3-year cumulative average above 85 are in the best position to earn admission. We highly recommend that students apply by November 15 to receive the earliest possible decision from Canisius by December 15; these students will still have until May 1 to pay their deposits. Students who do not apply by November 15 are encouraged to apply by no later than March 1 for full and equal consideration.

The Global Classroom

With a commitment to strengthening students’ global awareness, Canisius has expanded its Study Abroad offerings with five new programs. Students now may study in 18 cities in 13 different countries.  The new programs are:

Berlin, Germany - The Berlin School of Economics is one of the largest and most distinguished institutions  for business in Germany.

Rome, Italy - John Cabot University is a four-year liberal arts and sciences college with all classes taught in English. The University is located near St. Peter’s and the Vatican.

Florence, Italy - Lorenzo de’ Medici offers students more than 500 different courses varying from arts to politics.  There are many clubs and organizations that allow students to learn about the city and meet others with similar interests.

Sicily, Italy - The Mediterranean Center for Arts and Sciences specializes in Mediterranean studies, arts, and the natural sciences.  MCAS is located in the city of Syracuse, an ancient city near the Mediterranean Sea.

The Atlantis Grant Study Abroad Opportunity in Strasbourg, France/Antwerp, Belgium - Only seven of these prestigious grants were awarded nationwide by the U.S. Department of Education in 2006. Students can earn their European degree and their Canisius degree simultaneously.
More than 100 students study abroad each year.  The college’s other study abroad programs include: London, England; Lille, France; Queensland, Australia; Dortmund, Germany; Galway, Ireland; Tokyo, Japan; Oviedo, Spain; Beijing, China; and Uppsala, Sweden
