Thank you for taking the time to learn more about Canisius College!  It is an exciting time at Canisius College; the fall 2011 semester is in full swing, we have many new academic programs available and we welcomed John J. Hurley, the 24th president of Canisius College into office.

New Majors:

Journalism Major:
Students will be trained to become multimedia journalists, and prepared for employment in broadcast, print, and online media. The major is grounded in the social responsibility of the press. Students will study how to
provide a truthful, comprehensive and intelligent account in a context which gives meaning, how to provide a forum for the exchange of comment and criticism, and how to act responsibly for the presentation and clarification of the goals
and values of society. www.canisius.edu/journalism

Creative Writing Major: Students are given the opportunity to nurture and develop their writing talents in a supportive community of dedicated readers and writers.  Professors work closely with student writers in small classes providing the kind of individual guidance, support, and feedback young writers need.  Students can personalize their curriculum based on interest. Classes are
available in many genres: fiction, poetry writing, playwriting, memoir and writing for young adults. www.canisius.edu/creativewriting

Classics Major: Classics has always been an integral part of a liberal-arts education in general and of Jesuit education in particular. At Canisius, students enjoy intensive, personalized instruction in the translation of Greek and Latin authors. Almost all of ancient Greek and Latin literature is available through the Classics Department's computer resources. Courses are available in areas such as: classical art, literature, mythology, religion, philosophy, Roman law, history, and the Greek and Latin languages.

Environmental Studies: The curriculum will allow students to focus on interdisciplinary connections between environmental and social systems.  The major engages students to think critically about environmental issues and offer active learning experiences for students to apply their knowledge. Natural science perspectives of environmental studies are of course incorporated, but in this program environmental issues are viewed as a consequence of the interactions and relationships within social systems. www.canisius.edu/envstudies

Dance Minor: The dance minor was developed in conjunction with the highly acclaimed Neglia Ballet Artists of Buffalo, recognized for its high level of classical training. Open to students of all levels of experience from beginner to advanced,
the minor provides a solid foundation in dance through the development of technical and performance skills. www.canisius.edu/finearts/dance.asp

Animal Behavior Ecology and Conservation
The Animal Behavior, Ecology and Conservation Program combines the rigorous scientific study of animal behavior with a values-focused curriculum in the liberal arts tradition.  Canisius College is a national leader in this area by being among the first academic institutions to formally tie the study of animals to ethical considerations. www.canisius.edu/abec/
