August 2005 My Weekend in Brisbane
I spent one of my past weekends in Brisbane, a city south of the university, and about an hour drive away. It is small compared to "Big American" cities, but it is so clean and historical that you fall in love with it. You can get everywhere on foot and there are tons of markets to explore, with goods that you can not find anywhere else.

The city is settled on a large river, and has many different bridges with amazing architecture. There is also a large mall called the Queen Street mall, which has 6 floors and is about 3 blocks long, you could shop for hours. Not only is there massive amounts of shopping to do but there is also botanical gardens and many parks to just relax and learn about the city's long history. The day trip was sponsored by the university but I stayed the night in Brisbane in a hostile, so that I could also see the massive arts center. This includes a performing arts center, library, art museum and science museum. |
Both museums were amazing, and offered new and inventive displays free of charge. The architecture and displays around the buildings were as interesting as the displays inside. Overall the weekend was well worth the trip and the train ride back offers a chance to see the beautiful Glass House Mountains and the small towns between the Brisbane and the university Area.
