10-13-04  New Year, same story…NO TIME!

Hello all!

So the new school year has quickly begun (since I’ve been here all summer long!). Unlike last year, I’m taking 6 classes this semester and for the rest of my undergraduate education. Education majors need to have that added class since their last semester senior year is for student teaching…yay! Haha.

Remember how I was talking about my trip to Los Angeles? Well, the group that went had a little get together a few weeks ago and that was a lot of fun. We went to one of the girls off-campus houses and she made us a wonderful meal of salad, spaghetti, and garlic bread…Yum! It was a nice night to just hang out with a bunch of my college buddies, some of which I had met for the first time on the trip, and be around each other in conversation instead of school work or club activities. We will definitely have to do that again soon!

As for my six-class schedule, it really isn’t as bad as I thought it was going to be. Given that I am taking one online course, which sort of lightens my load a little bit, the other five still give me enough to keep me on my toes. Being a commuter, I decided to switch my schedule a little bit and start classes at 10:30 a.m. instead of 8:30 a.m. I can tell you that the drive to school is fabulous. The 33 West is absolutely beautiful to drive through, whereas in the early morning it’s bumper to bumper. Only problem with arriving so late is that there is some trouble finding a parking spot but so far I’ve only parked in the Koessler Lot once (one of the farthest lots away from the main campus). But as many people on campus have said, “Canisius does not have a parking problem, we have a walking problem.” Honestly, if you take a look at UB or Fredonia, Canisius has it lucky with the close proximity of parking available and the existence of our underground tunnels, which I absolutely adore!

I also was hired to work on campus in the Office of Campus Programming and Leadership Development. This could not be any more perfect since this is the office basically where all the activities on campus are planned and approved, and I am profoundly involved in the Commuter Student Association (CSA) which helps commuter students get involved on campus. I work about 10 hours a week and even though that really does not sound like a lot to some of you, I really do not know how I’m able to fit that amount of time in my busy schedule. Since I’ve been working there, I’ve become really comfortable with Sir Brian Smith and he rewards me with allowing me to have coffee in the morning! He is my lifesaver! My job basically consists of helping out the secretary, Elaine, in anything that she needs us to do. We answer phones, hang up and tear down posters, hang up the famed “Stall Street Journals,” and unfortunately do some mailings every once in awhile. It’s a very comfortable atmosphere and I love working there.

I believe that’s all that my big brain can think of now. In the next issue of Dan’s travels, I will go into depth about the BPO & Canisius Chorale connection and the Sleep Out for the Homeless! Will he make it through another day of college? Will he survive the madness of studying? Stay tuned to find out!
