October 2005  Wake Me Up...When September Ends...

Okay so I’ve been listening a little too much to Green Day but where exactly did September go?!?  Hey everybody and welcome to Volume III, Issue I of Dan’s “blogging” madness. Yes, this will be my third year enlightening all of your minds of the joys and wonders that is Canisius and I could not be happier.  It is already the beginning of October and I feel as if September has really flown right by and I totally missed everything that happened within that month.

Looking back on this past month, it has been the least productive month of my entire college career while still accomplishing everything that needed to be done and still being involved with everything that I do.  I would also like to add that I became the Contemporary Music Ensemble (CME) President quite recently.  CME sings for the Sunday night masses at Christ the King Chapel at 9:30 p.m.

Well, I figured it was about time for me to tell you a bit about my major for those of you wishing to become Education majors as myself.  Canisius has just been accredited by NCATE which is a very big deal because NCATE accreditation is national known and if you think that Canisius had an awesome Education program in the first place, it has just improved dramatically.

Since the Education program has national accreditation, the workload for Education majors has become much more than I have experienced in my 2+ years at Canisius.  I’m willing to bet though that junior year is the hardest year for any major because it seems to be the case with many of my other friends and it is also true in High School.  My one Education class is once a week and I potentially have the best professor ever!  She’s a marriage counselor so she understands the sexes very well and some of the topics that are brought up in class are actually interesting...imagine, actually enjoying the subject matter that you are learning!  It’s also great when the professor brings in Pizza for the entire class almost every week.

Unfortunately, not all Education classes can be like the one I just mentioned.  Instead of getting into too much detail, I will talk about the one aspect of an Education major’s life that is really hard to fit into your schedule...Observations!  This semester alone, I need to fulfill 30 hours of in class observations while also accumulating 15 hours of service learning (which will be fulfilled by being a tutor for a lucky kid on Saturday mornings).  I’m telling you now that as an Education major, you are going to have to do observations, especially in your sophomore and junior years. You want to make sure to plan your schedule accordingly and make sure that you leave time to leave campus and go to a school for a few awhile so that you will be able to get some hours in.  I’m actually at Maryvale High School right now doing my observations (Go Flyers! Sorry that’s my Alumni bias coming into play). One thing that’s different this time around is that I actually have to teach a lesson of 30-40 minutes in front of the class and videotape myself doing it.  I’m a little nervous but I’m sure I’ll do fine.  It will actually be in front of a class of freshmen (Global I) so it should not be too intimidating.

In closing, I’d like to leave you with some words of wisdom (which I do quite often) since I’m a philosophizer (Dodge Ball! Haha).  Enjoy your remaining days of High School which include dances, the school plays, the football games, homecoming, prom, hanging out with friends, etc.  When you’re deciding on a college, enter the decision with a clear mind and just follow your heart as to what you want to do.  Make sure that you at least visit the colleges that you are applying to so that you know that you really like the place that could potentially be receiving a lot of money from you.  When attending college for that first semester, come into it with that very same attitude.  Go to college with no biases and place no judgments on anybody because frankly you don’t know them and they could possibly be the nicest and most sincere person you have ever met.  Treat each day as a learning experience because in reality College is unlike anything you will ever experience in your life.  Canisius is a perfect place to really find out who you really are and prepares you to take that new knowledge with you and succeed in that big scary world that lays at our feet after graduation. Take care everybody and until next time!
