Dan's December 2003 Journal
1-30-2004 First Week of Classes
For my second journal I’m going to reflect on my first week back. Classes started Tuesday, which, as luck would have it, was my busiest day. As I said in my last journal – your schedule depends a lot on what your major is. However, it also depends on how active you want to be, and before I describe how hectic my first week was I want to say that I CHOSE to have it that way.
Having said that, Tuesday started with an 8:30-9:45 and a 10:00-11:15 class. I then relaxed in my room till my 1:00-2:15 class, had a computer meeting because I work for the ITS (Information Technology Services) department on campus (3:00 till 4:30), and then went back to my room for an hour to eat and get my books for my 6:00-8:45 class. I never got back to my room till 9:30 that night. (THIS IS AN UNUSUALLY BUSY DAY THOUGH).
Wednesday began with a 9:30-10:20 and a 12:30-3:30 class. After that I ended up doing 3 computer calls (I take care of viruses, software installs, and internet problems for the ITS department). I then took a fourth call at 12:00am for a friend. Although this is typical for the beginning of the semester, I usually don’t work after 10:00pm. However, the ITS department is giving all residents free Antivirus software this semester and I made myself available to help people install it.
My Thursday schedule is the same as Tuesday except that I don’t have the evening class, and Friday I only have one class at 9:30, but I go skiing 4:00 – 12:00. Click here to view my on-line schedule.
As far as my classes go, this semester shouldn’t be a killer – even though I’m taking 6 classes. I’m taking advantage of the pass/fail option in one of my classes, and the rest of them are mostly area studies – but they’re all relevant to what I am interested in. I have found that to be pretty typical with most of the area studies offered here at Canisius. If you plan your four years well, you can definitely find classes that interest you (even in area studies)!
And as far as my schedule I know it seems busy, but it’s by choice. I know people that are completely done with classes by noon and yet others that have a 2:30-5:30 class twice a week! It all depends on how ambitious you want to be.
Again, as I said in my last entry…I’ve already been emailed a few questions, but I need some more to make it a full journal entry, so PLEASE EMAIL ME (I can’t make it a full entry without more questions). My email is surdykd@canisius.edu and my name is Dan.
