Applying for Financial Aid

Step 1

Begin to gather information you will need to complete financial aid applications like the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Parents will be asked for taxable and non-taxable income information for themselves and the student, as well as information about assets.

Step 2

Between January 1 and February 15, submit the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) in order to determine your eligibility for federal, state and Canisius College funds. We encourage you to file your FAFSA online at FAFSA Worksheets are also available at your high school guidance office, the Canisius College Financial Aid Office and the public library. The Canisius College code for the FAFSA is 002681.

Step 3

The  TAP on the Web Application should be completed, in addition to the FAFSA form, for students applying for the New York State Tuition Assistance Program. If you complete the FAFSA online, you can connect to the New York State Web site and apply for TAP online.  If you missed the connection to TAP on the FAFSA site, you can visit the site at

The Canisius College code for the TAP application is 0090.

Step 4

New students who comply with the recommended filing date of February 15 can expect to receive a comprehensive financial aid notification in the mail by mid-March. Returning students will begin to receive award notices in mid-May and following.

*Students applying for admission after February 15 should complete their financial aid applications as soon as possible.
