2-26-04 College Level Work
“Have you finished your homework?” This is a question my Mom would constantly ask me when I was in high school and living at home. Even though my Mom’s constant questioning about my homework was annoying, I admit it helped me stay on track and do well in school. Now that I’m in college I’ve realized there is a big difference between high school work and college work. Being responsible and not going completely wild with your new independence are two important issues that will determine your success in college.
Unlike high school, in college you don’t get homework. Yeah, I know, it sounds great! However, it’s not like you never have work to do, its just up to you to decide when to study, how much to study, or whether to study at all. Through my experience so far this year, I haven’t really gotten too many assignments, but I’ve had to read a whole lot more than in the past.
Professors usually lecture about subjects that are in a particular book whether it’s a textbook or a novel. It’s always the student’s responsibility to become familiar with that material before coming to class. While I was in high school, teachers would hound students about homework and assignments until they were turned in. In college, it’s not that professors don’t care how their students do; they simply expect students to have enough responsibility to get things in on time.
Living on your own and having complete freedom also plays a big part in getting your schoolwork done. Temptation comes hand and hand with being independent. Every night of the week there is always some type of event going on, whether it’s a party down the street, activities on campus, or hanging out with a bunch of friends. Since your parents aren’t with you telling you what to do, the choice is up to you. I suggest before coming to college really think about your goals in life and what you want out of your college experience.
