3-28-04 Housing Selection
Wow! Freshman year is almost over! College definitely goes by faster than high school. This past week has been housing selection week. Unlike last year where I really didn’t get much of a say in housing, as a soon to be sophomore, I get to chose where I want to live.
As an incoming freshman moving from Stillwater, Oklahoma to Buffalo, New York, not knowing anyone was a big issue and without a doubt made me anxious. However, knowing that I had an opportunity to meet people at orientation and knowing that all freshmen have to fill out a housing application calmed my nerves.
Prior to moving in, Residence Life sends everyone a housing application with questions about your interests, area of study, and preferred level of loudness. Then Residence Life uses this application to match you up with someone of similar interests. However, if you already know someone you would like to room with there is a section on the application for roommate preference. Freshmen must live in the dorms, but have the option of living in Bosch or Frisch, as well as the option for different types of room occupancies.
I just went through the housing process for sophomore year and it was totally different than the process for incoming freshmen. Upperclassmen get to choose where they want to live depending on GPA, total number of credit hours, and disciplinary standing. Now that I’ve gone to school here for a semester and a half and made friends, it’s a lot easier when it comes time to finding roommates. My friends and I decided that we wanted to live in a 5-person townhouse.
After you decide what type of housing complex you want, you get ranked. Then depending on your ranking you get to pick your choice of housing based on availability. Thankfully, my friends and I got our first choice for housing with a five-person apartment in the Village Townhouses! I can’t wait to live in my own townhouse with all my friends!
