4-19-04   Registering for Classes

The past month school has kept me pretty busy with a visit home, friends and activities, and now enrollment.  I recently went home for Easter break.   It was relaxing, even though I brought the rainy weather with me to Oklahoma.  The best thing about being an out-of- state student is the variety of life that you experience; you are able to live two different lifestyles.  One is living in the northeast on my own, attending Canisius, having my own group of friends and experiencing Buffalo.  The other lifestyle is in the southern midwest living with my family, having my old group of friends there, and enjoying all the comforts of home.  So whenever breaks come around it’s always interesting going back and forth.

This week I’m enrolling in classes for next year, which is always exciting when you get to decide your schedule for next year.  However, when you are making the decisions about what classes you need to take to stay on track with your major, your advisors will be there to help you along.  The best recommendation that I’ve received as a freshman is to talk to friends, classmates, and advisors about professors to see what they are like.  This is beneficial to the student because you can get a sense of their teaching style before having an actual class with them.

Another good thing about attending a smaller college is that for the most part you can find someone who had a particular professor or who knows of someone who did.  This makes finding information that much easier.

It hardly seems possible my freshman year is almost over!  So many new
experiences have certainly been exciting and challenging on many levels.  I think the key to a successful freshman year would definitely be learning to balance all the demands on your time.  Time management is crucial in order to do well in your classes and still participate in extra-curricular activities, if you know what I mean.  My advice to you would be to get as much sleep as you can now, because you won’t be sleeping much your freshman year!
