5-18-04  Reflecting on Freshman Year

Canisius has been my home away from home.  Honestly, I’ve experienced more in my first year of college than I have in my entire life.  At Canisius, I’ve had exposure to people from around the world.  I’ve learned to balance school, extracurricular activities, a part-time job, and to manage my finances.  Learning to live with a roommate was a major challenge my first semester.  Last month my friends and I took a road trip to Boston!  For the most part, I have found my independence at Canisius.

In the beginning, the transitional period was a little tough because it was my first time away from my family, hometown, and friends.  However, once I met my RA at my first floor meeting and all the other girls on my floor I was instantly   relieved, and the initial awkwardness went away.  As time went on I began to feel more and more comfortable in my surroundings.

Even though I miss my parents, I love Canisius so much I’ve decided to stay and spend the summer here as a Resident Assistant.  I’ve heard Buffalo summers are fantastic, plus I’m really enjoying my independence!  Right now I’m looking forward to meeting my new roommates, “Thursdays in the Square”, and spending time with all my friends that I met first semester. 

I’m so happy I decided to come to Canisius. The professors, faculty and students that I’ve encountered have all had a positive attitude about this school and are extremely dedicated to the service of others.
