1-30-2004  Academics at Canisius

Hello again…

I decided for this entry I would allow a look into my academic background. I ultimately decided to come to Canisius because of the atmosphere of the campus. I find that things are very close knit and once you’re here you are apart of something that is like a family. If you don’t know everyone by name you will definitely know most people by face. You can point people out and you can easily become apart of the many clubs and organizations that are readily available on campus.

I study Communications and as of right now I am not exactly sure of a concentration. I am leaning towards Publications and the Media. Hopefully putting me somewhere in the realm of writing and of course publishing.

The good thing about the campus and the different departments is that it is easy to find something that you like. When I was a freshman it was very difficult for me to make a decision on what I wanted to study. I had no idea what to focus on and I had to speak to numerous people to get some kind of an idea of what I was interested in. I have never been that great in public speaking I used to be mortified at the thought of even raising my hand in class but I took a Communications course in public speaking and it completely changed my mind and attitude. I had to get in front of class, make up speeches off the top of my head and even write a couple of 10 minute speeches. At the end of the course I was confident and could even see myself doing some kind of Public Relations work.

The Canisius College community is amazing to me because it is a great place to network. I am one of the General Managers for the radio station on campus. Working with a couple of other people we had to completely reassemble the station and make it a fully functional club on campus. We now are able to host parties and further interact with the rest of the community. Being apart of the Communications network we can now reach out to the many other clubs that are communication oriented.

If it isn’t that easy for you to be able to come to a conclusion about what you want to do for your college career, there is an on campus career center where you can get consultation. It is a one on one environment with a couple of workshops thrown in for you to get a sense of different careers and areas that you would be strong in.
