5-17-2004 The Past Year and the Upcoming Summer
Now that the semester is over it is time to kick back and relax right? Well no not for everyone. I will be one of those Canisians that never leave this school. I haven’t gone home a single summer since I began and this summer will be no different. Most people like to go home and see their family or just get some time to get away from school. I actually feel more at home here than I do in Florida. People would love nothing more than to go to a place where it is always warm, but I like being around people I know and being able to get from point to point without having to bug my mom for a ride.
This semester was a tough one. I had so many things going on at one time. Between working 3 jobs and doing a couple of volunteer things here and there I only had time for schoolwork and the occasional movie. But it is well worth it in the end to go into a final and feel confident that you passed. At the same time it is sad to know that in one more year it will all be over. I am finally a senior. I should be excited but I am sad because Canisius really has been a home and so has Buffalo. I made some life long friends and wonder if we will still be friends when it is all over and we are all spread out back to where we came from.
One the whole, the semester was also exciting for a couple of reasons. One was the Communications Luncheon. During this time there were some people who visited Canisius for a brief meet and great. I had the opportunity to meet with a local news director. It was good to be able to get some exposure already and talk to people who are in fields that I am interested in working in. We talked about internship opportunities and I asked her for advice when it came time for me to apply for an internship or even a job. Things like this are possible at Canisius because the faculty care enough to invite people that they may know to come and talk to the students. They enlist outsiders to come give advice or some kind of guidance during a time when it may be difficult to plan and have a direction to go in.
Another high point of my semester was just last week. I was working at one of the banquets on campus when a woman that I have seen around was introduced to me by the director of admissions. She told me that she has seen me around campus during my tours and that I seemed really familiar to her. Then after telling her some of the things that I did on campus, she realized that she knew me through this journal. She made feel like I was famous. It was interesting to feel that way and made me realize that people are actually reading this thing. That is a really good thing because I hope that people who are interested in attending Canisius are getting something out of this. That is why I write in here and talk about my experiences, because I want people to hear good things about a good school.
So this summer like the last I will be on campus working for the residence life paint crew. This is one of the summer job opportunities that are offered. It is normally pretty popular for the people who don’t want to go home or who are taking classes during the summer sessions. Aside from paint crew there is also work for physical plant and work study just like during the semester. Since the offices are all open during the summer it is pretty easy to get a summer job on campus. There are so many opportunities I don’t think I could name them all. This summer should prove to be a good one. Now it is time for the worst part of the year packing everything up and moving your entire life somewhere else. Once you go to school…it is your life and it changes everything. Hopefully the changes are good.
For my final point of the semester I would like to send my condolences to the friends and family of Richard Jones. I really enjoyed the time that I got to know him, and he really will be missed. He was a good person and always made me smile.
Everyone have a safe and fun summer. Hope to see some of you in the fall!
