Summertime, and the Livin's Easy

Although at this time next week I will be sitting in class, mourning the loss of summer and fighting to remain in denial about the upcoming end of my undergraduate career, for now summer lives and I remain a student who is, almost, but not quite yet, a senior in college.

Summer . . . summer . . . summer . . . what a great season!  Despite having my little bout with mono in June, I still managed to fill the past three months with plenty of excitement and relaxation.  Even after the unofficial midpoint of summer, the 4th of July, the point at which my last journal left off, there was still plenty of time to fill with adventure and intrigue.  One of my favorite annual Buffalo festivals, The Taste of Buffalo, was on during the following weekend and, as I never miss an opportunity to eat way more than is nutritionally necessary when Buffalonian cuisine is involved, I spent the better part of my weekend indulging in the best food that Western New York has to offer.

My best friend, Kelli Gardner '08, and I in front of City Hall at the
Taste of Buffalo.

Although The Taste of Buffalo is always a treat, this year’s was especially exciting because the Office of Admissions here at Canisius provided a few of my friends and I with a VERY generous pile of free tickets for food.

Me eating my second helping of one of my favorite foods,
the ever popularMacaroni n' Cheese.

As summer rolled on, I somehow found myself in the middle of August.  Because, unlike most college students, I do not go home for the summer, but stay at school to work, I take a week off each August to spend with my family at home in Missouri.  My favorite thing to do when I go home is to go on a float trip.  Although the term float trip is well engrained into Missourian vocabulary, most people in the Northeast have never heard of it.  Going on a float trip simply involves renting rafts, canoes, or tubes and spending all day drifting down a river on the floating device of your choice while relaxing and lying in the sun.  As you can see, it’s pretty hardcore stuff ;-)

My brother, Brian and I on our floating device of choice (a raft).  (Isn't he cute?!)

As there are many small rivers in Missouri, float trips are popular there, unlike here, where, our only river includes, well, that whole Niagara Falls thing.  The trip was wonderfully relaxing and also quite invigorating.  It is always good to go home, but always good to come back here as well.

Me trying to avoid getting frostbite on my feet by holding them out of the really, really,
unbelievably cold water of a river-feeding mountain stream.

All in all, I had a great summer, and hope everyone else did too.  Take care and good luck to everyone with the upcoming school year!
