October 2006
Surprise Vacation!

This past October has been crazy!  The huge snowstorm and resulting power outage was a totally unexpected surprise.  Since the snow has melted and power has been restored to Buffalo, classes and campus activities have resumed as usual.  Though this October was marked by the snowstorm that knocked down every tree in Buffalo, it is great to see that the campus’s spirit has not been dampened (or frozen, for that matter!).

When the snow started falling while I was in Biochemistry on the afternoon that it all started, I thought what everyone else thought, that there would be a short flurry that wouldn’t stick (the snow would instantly melt) and fall weather would continue as anticipated.  After a few hours, with the snow coming down thicker and faster, I thought, and hoped for, what many Canisius students I’m sure hope for when the snow starts to fall, “maybe there will be a snow day tomorrow and classes will be canceled!”  Though I hope for this every year when the snow comes, it hardly ever happens.  But this year it did, three snow days.  That’s a five day weekend!

The snow piled up outside my townhouse.  Yay for snow days!

Trees lining the streets after they knocked out most of the power in the area.
Good thing Canisius still had power!

Though classes were canceled, the campus was still buzzing with activity.  In a lot of the city and area surrounding the campus, the power was knocked out by trees that fell on power lines.  Central campus did not loose power and neither did a lot of the residence buildings (isn’t it great to live on campus?).  As an RA, I helped to set up a place for students to sleep who lived in the two dorms that lost power and the houses surrounding the campus.  This way, the students would have an alternate warm place to sleep.  New activities were also created for students to keep busy.  In Palisano, a game room, a place to watch movies, and food were available on a daily basis.  Many RA’s held activities in the residence halls.  I had a pizza party for my residents.  Even though the storm brought a lot of wreckage to the area, I think that the students, especially the residents, had a good time over the five day weekend.

Apple picking!

Since the snow has melted, activities on campus have returned to normal.  Classes have returned to normal, events in Palisano are now on the regularly scheduled Thursday, Friday, and Saturday nights instead of every night, and the weather has returned to be more like the expected fall weather (I even went apple picking with some of my friends!).  Next, I will be getting ready for professional school exams, like many of the students in the junior class.  And even though we’ve had enough of them, the next time the snow starts to fall, I will hope for more snow days!

Enjoying the fall weather by apple picking with some friends.
