In Buffalo for the Summer

Summer at Canisius is extremely busy!  Already, a whole month has gone by.  There is so much going on both on and off campus in Buffalo.

This summer, all of the summer residents are living in Eastwood Residence Hall.  It’s a really nice place to live, especially because of the air conditioning!  I like being an RA because not only do I get to interact with everyone living on the floor, but I also get to plan events.  This past Monday, all the RAs on the summer staff worked together to plan a barbeque for all the residents.  It was a lot of fun.  We ate dinner and played games like badminton, volleyball, and croquet.  Currently, the whole staff is working on a movie and s’mores night and my co-RA and I are working on planning a weekend brunch and a craft night where we decorate doorstoppers (these are a necessity when living in Eastwood because the doors close and lock automatically).  There is always some kind of activity going on in the residence halls at Canisius!

There are also a lot of research opportunities for students at Canisius.  For a lot of students, the academic year is much too busy to allow time for research.  Because of this, many professors plan for research projects to take place in the summer.  I do biomathematical models of tumor growth with my physics professor, Dr. Mitra Feizabadi.  Last semester, I went to two different conferences to present my research, one in Rochester, NY and the other at SUNY Geneseo.  If you are interested in getting involved in research, you can simply ask a professor or your academic advisor about available research opportunities.

Here I am working on my research project using
the computer program MATLAB.

Though there is a lot happening on campus, there is even more going on off campus in Buffalo!  Not too long ago, my friends and I went downtown to the Allentown Art Festival.  It’s a really interesting place to go, even if you are not shopping.  A lot of the stores in the Allentown (really artsy) area set up tents that line the streets.  There is plenty to see and eat.  Near Café 59, there was a stage set up in the street and different bands were playing.  One of the streets was lined with booths selling fair food like fried dough and lemonade.  There were different tents with paintings, jewelry, books, and crafts.  You could find something for everyone at the festival!

Every Thursday, there is a concert in Lafayette Square.  Thursdays at the Square is a part of the Buffalo Concert Series.  There is a stage set up outside and people come to see the band and listen to live music.  Even if you do not have a car, you can take the subway downtown to the concert.  Last Thursday, I went with a few of my friends and I learned that if you do not get there early, do not plan on seeing the band play!  The Square was packed.  Lafayette Square is definitely the place to be on Thursday nights!

Staying on campus during the summer is kind of nice.  I get to work here and do research.  I get to hang out with friends and meet new people.  I get to go out and try things in Buffalo.  Even though this summer at Canisius is so busy, it is really a lot of fun.
