To reserve your place in the freshman class, you will need to pay a deposit. The deposit for students living on campus is $400; the deposit for students living at home and commuting is $200. You may pay your deposit at any time after you are accepted up until May 1, the National Candidates' Reply Date Agreement. The deposit is non-refundable after May 1.
You may pay your deposit in one of three ways. You may pay online using the User ID and password provided on the Deposit Form in your acceptance packet. You may also pay with a credit card by phone by calling the Office of Admissions at 716-888-2200 or 1-800-843-1517. The office is open Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Please note that the college is closed from December 24 through January 5. You may also pay by sending a check or money order along with the deposit form in your acceptance packet to the Office of Admissions. A business reply envelope was also enclosed in your acceptance packet, so postage will not be required.
After you have paid your tuition and housing deposit of $400, you will be able to fill out the online housing preference form. This form allows you to indicate information about the type of housing you want to live in as well as personal information that will help the Office of Residence Life pair you with another incoming freshman. You will need the User ID and password provided on the Deposit Form in your acceptance packet in order to access the online housing preference form.
New student orientation will take place beginning August 25. Online registration is available beginning April 15.
Students who are granted Federal Work Study should go to the financial aid office web site during the week prior to the start of classes for a list of offices hiring work study students. Students will apply for jobs that interest them. There are many positions available; however, placement is not guaranteed. View more information on Federal Work Study.
First-year students may choose from one of two meal plans during the first semester and one of three meal plans during the second semester. The college catalog describes each major in detail and which courses are required to earn a degree. In addition to major courses, all students must take a number of classes in the core curriculum. View more information about the Core Curriculum.
Typically, first semester freshmen will take five courses. Some challenging majors, such as biology, recommend that their students take only four courses first semester. Students may take as many as six classes per semester, but that is typically not recommended for first-year students.
You will first meet your advisor during orientation. First year students are required to meet with their advisors at least twice each semester. One of these appointments will be to discuss progress reports from your instructors, and one will be to discuss registration for the following semester. You are encouraged to contact your academic advisor at any time during the year to discuss academic options.
If you took college-level courses offered by or at another college while in high school, you must have an official transcript sent to the Registrar’s Office at Canisius College. A transcript from high school is insufficient. You will typically be required to make the request in writing to the college awarding the credit.
Once the transcript is received, it will be evaluated for credit. Some courses may come in as credit in your major or the curriculum, while other courses may count as elective credit.
After your first year, if you have decided on a major, you will be assigned to a faculty member in the department of your major. If you have not declared a major, or are uncertain about the major you are considering, you should visit the Student Advisement Center to discuss your options and an advisor there will help you register for classes. Undeclared students should also visit a career advisor in the Career Center, located in Old Main 013, to discuss potential careers.
If you are undecided about a major, you are like many other incoming freshmen. You will be advised by the Student Advisement Center until you have chosen a major, which you will need to do by the end of your sophomore year. Undecided students are strongly encouraged to meet with a counselor in the Career Center to discuss potential career and major options.
First-year students are allowed to bring cars to campus, but parking near your residence hall is not guaranteed. All undergraduate students are given a Metro Pass that enables you to use the city's public transportation for free. Additionally, Canisius offers weekend shuttles to the Walden Galleria Mall, area supermarkets and to the ski resorts during ski season.
