Leadership & Involvement
Like any organization, a chapter can succeed only if it has strong and involved leadership. You have the opportunity to share your talents and expertise by becoming either a chapter officer or a member of its leadership committee. The Canisius Alumni Association recommends that each chapter have three officers (president, vice-president, secretary/treasurer); the chapter leadership committee should include these three officers, plus an additional two to seven members. Chapter leadership should represent a range of ages, genders and areas of study and interest.
While each chapter’s region and scope of activities will determine the size of its leadership committee, the typical chapter should fill the following positions:
President
The president will provide overall leadership for the chapter. The chapter president should demonstrate strong leadership, communication skills and public speaking ability. Presidents must have E-mail and Internet access and be able to devote the time necessary to fulfill the chapter’s leadership needs. Chapter presidents should also plan to have a significant amount of interaction with the Office of Alumni Relations and the Alumni Association Board of Directors.
The appointed president will serve a two-year term [after serving two years as vice president.]
The president should:

Schedule and then chair over the chapter's annual planning meeting.

Work with the vice-president and Assistant Director of Alumni Relations to develop meeting agendas.

Coordinate with the leadership committee to schedule meetings.

Assist the Alumni Office with the identification and recruitment of leadership committee members.
-
Work with the leadership committee to delegate tasks and identify event coordinators.
-
Ensure chapter adherence to the alumni association mission and practices.
-
Acquire knowledge about details of all chapter events. Communicate frequently with the assistant director of alumni relations.

Attend chapter events Offer welcoming remarks at chapter events.

Attend leadership training seminars hosted by the college.

Ensure completion of chapter summary reports after each event.

Report to the Alumni Office on the alumni who express interest in future leadership committee membership.

Serve on the leadership committee one year after term expiration.

The Assistant Director of Alumni Relations will work closely with the president to fulfill his/her duties.

Vice-President
The vice-president will assume the duties of the president in his/her absence. The vice-president position will be used to prepare a leadership committee member to assume the role of chapter president. The committee will elect a new vice-president from the existing leadership committee every two years.
The vice-president should:

Attend chapter events.

Work with the president and Assistant Director of Alumni Relations to develop meeting agendas.

Assist the president in recruiting alumni to attend events and activities.

Help the president recruit leadership committee members.

Ensure chapter adherence to the Alumni Association mission and practices.

Work with event coordinators to plan chapter events.

Report to the secretary/treasurer alumni who express interest in future leadership committee membership.

Secretary
The Secretary should have good listening and writing skills.
The Secretary will:

Attend chapter events.

Record meeting minutes and distribute them to the leadership committee.

Maintain leadership committee roster and report all changes to the Office of Alumni Relations.

Keep track alumni who want to be considered for leadership committee membership.

Leadership Committee
The leadership committee plans and organizes all chapter activities. Try to assemble a leadership committee of alumni with diverse interests and skills. The committee should be made up of five to 10 alumni volunteers (no more or less to ensure group effectiveness) including three leadership committee positions. They are president, vice-president, and secretary.
Responsibilities

Attend the majority of chapter meetings.

Plan chapter events and activities.

If needed, identify alumni outside of the leadership committee to help them organize events and activities.

Communicate with the chapter president event details.

Attend chapter events.

Coordinate with assistant director of alumni relations to publicize events and activities.

Coordinate set up and registration, and meet and greet guests at alumni events.

Report to the secretary/treasurer alumni who express interest in future leadership committee membership.
