Art History

Canisius College offers art history scholarships for new students entering Fall 2013 and planning to major in art history.

Students who demonstrate an interest in studying the history of art are eligible for $2,000 per year. These scholarships are in addition to merit scholarships and are renewable for four years.

Requirements

  • Admission to Canisius College as a full-time student for Fall 2013
  • Letter of application from the student, describing extent of experience with art history and outlining reasons for planning to major or minor in the discipline  Note: there is no separate application form.
  • Two letters of recommendation from teachers, including one which discusses the student’s exposure to and experience with art history
  • Interview, either in person or by phone, with the Canisius art history faculty. Interviews will be arranged after other scholarship materials are received.

Optional Criteria

  • Score of three or above on the Advanced Placement Art History exam
  • Grade of B or above in a high school art history course

Students who receive art history scholarships will be expected to major or minor in art history, maintain a GPA of at least 2.5 and to participate in art history activities, including active participation in the ArtsCanisius Promotion Club.

Dance Scholarships

$2,000 Dance scholarships are available to students entering Canisius in the Fall 2013 semester. The scholarships are in addition to merit awards and are renewable for four years.

Criteria

  • Admission to Canisius as a full-time student for Fall 2013 semester.
  • Submission of completed application.
  • DVD of 10-minute video of barre work, center work and solo work within the last year, properly labeled.


References

Two letters of recommendation from dance teachers, counselor, community/church leader. One of the two letters should be from a dance teacher familiar with the applicant's work.

Recipients

After review of completed application by the scholarship committee, students will be notified by mail.

Conditions

Maintain a 2.5 GPA
Enter Canisius with the intent to minor in Dance.

Deadline

Completed applications must be received at the address below by January 21, 2013.

Music Scholarships

$2,000 scholarships are available to incoming freshman and transfer students. These scholarships are in addition to merit scholarships and are renewable for four years. It is not necessary to be a music major or minor to apply for a music scholarship.

Criteria

  • Admission to Canisius College as a full-time student Fall 2013 semester
  • High school music performance experience (solo or ensemble)
  • Scholarship application and reference letters
  • Solo Audition (February 9, 2013)
    • Vocal – Two contrasting styles of music (two classical or one classical and one musical theater) - Accompaniment required
    • Instrumental – Two contrasting styles of music (selections of movements or etudes are acceptable) - Major and minor scales - Sight-reading

References

Include two letters of reference. One should be from a music teacher. Other suggested sources include high school principal, teacher, guidance counselor, community/church leader.

Audition

Applicants will be invited on campus for an audition and interview to be held February, 2013. The scholarship committee will make final selection of scholarship recipients. (Students residing outside a 300-mile radius may audition by CD. Call the music office for CD requirements.)

Conditions

  • Maintain a cumulative GPA of 2.5
  • Active participation in one of the Canisius College performance ensembles
  • Membership in the Arts Promotion Club

Studio Art Scholarships

Numerous $2,000 studio art scholarships are available to incoming first-year students. The scholarships are in addition to merit awards and renewable for four years.

Criteria

  • Admission to Canisius as a full-time student for Fall 2013 semester.
  • Slide sheet or compact disc (no zip discs, please) of 10 to 20 works in any medium/a, within the last two years, properly labeled.

References

Two letters of recommendation from teachers, counselor, community/church leader.  One of the two letters should be from an art teacher familiar with the applicant’s work who can comment on the student’s developing art skills.

After review of completed application by the scholarship committee, students will be notified by mail.

Conditions

  • Maintain a 2.5 GPA.
  • Enter Canisius with intent to minor in studio art.
  • Active four year participation in ArtsCanisius Promotion Club.
