Andy Smith Head Athletic Trainer
Andy Smith, a 1989 graduate of Canisius College, serves as the school's head athletic trainer. Smith returned to Canisius un August 1996 after spending six years as an assistant athletic trainer at the United States Military Academy in West Point, N.Y. He also spent one year as a graduate assistant athletic trainer at the University of Illinois, where he received a master's degree in kinesiology/athletic training in 1990.
As the head athletic trainer at Canisius, Smith provides primary coverage for the Golden Griffin men's basketball team with secondary coverage for the College's remaining 15 intercollegiate teams. He also administers and oversees the student-athlete accident insurance and NCAA and Canisius College Drug Testing programs. The western New York native also serves as an adjunct professor for athletic training curriculums through the Joint Review Committee on Athletic Training. His certifications include BOC Certification, Clinical Instructor Educator and National Safety Council Instructor of CPR, First Aid and AED.
Smith has offered a variety of regional and national presentations on several topics in sports medicine. He has also been involved with the United States Olympic Committee Sports Medicine Team and was a volunteer athletic trainer at the United States Olympic Training Center in Lake Placid, N.Y. He worked the 1999 Summer World University Games in Palma de Mallorca, Spain, and helped coordinate athletic training services at the 2004 and 2007 NCAA Division I Men's Basketball Championship First and Second Rounds in Buffalo. Smith has served in numerous capacities within the New York State Athletic Trainers Association (NYSATA), including treasurer, regional representative, webmaster and president from 2002-04, where he represented nearly 1,300 certified and student athletic trainers statewide. He was honored by the NYSATA with the Thomas J. Sheehan Sr., Award for outstanding service to the profession. He recently served as a member of the NATA's Inter-Association Task Force on "Recomended Guidelines on How to Prepare for and Manhage Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA) During High School and College Athletic Practices and Competitions," which has been published in numberous journals.
Smith lives in Eggertsville, N.Y., with his wife, Carol, and their children, Grant and Ava.
Pete Koehneke Assistant Athletic Trainer/ Department Chair/Program Director
Pete Koehneke is a professor and chair of the Department of Sports Medicine, Health and Human Performance, as well as the director of the athletic training program at Canisius College. Koehneke earned both his bachelor of science and master of science degrees from Indiana State University in areas of athletic training, health education, adapted physical educationa nd physical education. He also served as a gradaute assistant athletic trainer and stayed on to become one of the College's full-time assistant athletic trainers. He currently serves as the primary athletic trainer for the school's softball and golf programs.
After leaving Indiana State, Koehneke worked as the head athletic trainer and instructor at Rhode Island College in Providence. In 1978, Koehneke joined the Canisius College faculty and staff by taking the position of head athletic trainer and program director. Over the years, he has risen up the academic ranks to full professor, academic chair and director of the athletic training program.
Within the sports medicine department, Koehneke teaches several courses, supervises the athletic training internship program and is an approved clinical instructor, supervising several students. He is also a National Safety Council first aid and CPR instructor and clinical educator instructor.
Koehneke has made tremedous contributions to the athletic training profession. He was a CAAHEP commissioner, chair of the Joint Review Committee on Athletic Training, site visitor, and reader of candidacy materials. He is also a member of the NATA Education Council Executive Committee, and the NATA Long Range Strategic Planning Committee and the National Strength and Conditioning Association. He has been a member of the NATA Professional Education Committee and has been active within the United States Olympic Committee, serving at the Olympic Festival in St. Louis and the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs. Currently, he serves as a manuscript reviewer for the JAT and six publishers. He has given multiple presentations at the state, regional and national levels, and has spoken internationally in Canada, Japan and Taiwan. Koehneke was elected to the Board of Certification in 2005. The board oversees 18,000 certified athletic trainers.
For all the professional activities and more, Koehneke has earned great recognition in athletic training. He has earned several awards, including the NATA Education Council Distinguished Educatior Award, the NATA Most Distinguished Athletic Trainer Award and the NYSATA Thomas Sheehan Award. Most recently, he was inducted into the NATA and NYSATA Halls of Fame.
Melissa Donato Assistant Athletic Trainer
Melissa Donato is in her fifth year on the Canisius College athletic training staff. She serves as the athletic trainer for the school's volleyball, swimming and diving and men's lacrosse programs. She joined the staff at Canisius after serving one year as the head athletic trainer at Akron High School in Akron, N.Y.
Donato graduated with a bachelor of science degree from Elmira College in 2000, and earned her master's degree from Central Connecticut State in New Britain, Conn. There, she worked with the school's women's soccer team as a graduate assistant. She also served as an assistant athletic trainer for the Buffalo Destroyers of the Arena Football League in 2002, and held the postition of head athletic trainer for the United States Soccer League's Connecticut Wolves.
Donato is a member of the national and New York State Athletic Trainers Assocation, and has been an examiner for the BOC Certification exam. She also acts as an approved clinical instructor in the athletic training program at Canisius.
Donato currently lives in Amherst.
Matt Hamilton Assistant Athletic Trainer
Matt Hamilton is in his first year as a full-time athletic trainer at Canisius College after serving as a gradaute assistant in the department for two years. He is responsible for the College's men's soccer, baseball and synchronized swimming teams. He is also an approved clinical instructor in the CAATE accredited undergraduate program in athletic training at Canisius.
While earning his master's degree at Canisius in health and human performance, Hamilton was responsible for assisting with laboratory and teaching duties within the atheltic training program. A native of Peru, N.Y., Hamilton served as the head athletic trainer at the 2006 and 2007 MAAC Tennis Championships at the United States Tennis Center in Flushing, N.Y.
Hamilton came to Canisius in 2005 after graduating Cum Laude from SUNY-Cortland with his bachelor's degree in athletic training. A certified athletic trainer (NATABOC), Hamilton received Cortland's 2005 Dr. Karel Horak Outstanding Athletic Training Student Award, as well as the school's 2004 Athletic Training Peer Recognition Award.
He currently lives in Buffalo.
Amy Miller Assistant Athletic Trainer
Amy Miller is starting her seventh year at Canisius College, where she serves as the athletic trainer for the school's women's basketball and women's soccer programs. She also serves as an approved clinical instructor at the College, where she teaches Nutrition for the Athletic Trainer.
Miller earned her bachelor's degree in athletic training from the University of Charleston in West Virginia. Upon graduation, she received the Thomas S. Templeton Memorial Athletic Training Fellowship from the Center of Sports Medicine and Orthopaedics in Chattanooga, Tenn. As an athletic training fellow, she served as an athletic trainer at Notre Dame High School and the McCallie School, which are both located in Chattanooga. From there, Miller attened the University of Kentucky, where she earned her master's degree while serving as a graduate assistant athletic trainer for the Wildcats' swimming and diving programs.
The Pittsburgh native serves as the site coordinator for the NCAA and Canisius College Drug Testing programs and also acts as the alumni relations representative within the athletic training department.
She is an active member in both the national and New York state athletic training associations. Miller has contributed research to the profession and has presented at both the national and state levels. She currently lives in Buffalo.
Ryan Rajk Assistant Athletic Trainer
Ryan Rajk is entering his second year on the Canisius College athletic training staff. The 2001 gradaute of Canisius College currently serves as the athletic trainer for the school's ice hockey, women's lacrosse and cross country programs.
Rajk holds two degrees from the College, having earned his master's degree in sport administration in 2005. Before returning to Canisius, he was a physican extender for Excelsior Orthopaedics Physical and Occupational Therapy.
Rajk was an assistant athletic trainer at Sweet Home High School, where he worked with the football, ice hockey and lacrosse programs. In 2005 and 2006, he worked at the CAN/AM hockey camps in Guelph, Ont., and has alos worked as an athletic trainer at the Fast Break Lacrosse and JIm Kelly Football camps.
Originally from Syracuse, N.Y., Rajk currently resides in Amherst.
