Because Buffalo is poised to become an international center for bioinformatics research, there are significant opportunities for hands-on student training and research.   In addition to bioinformatics research projects underway at Canisius, the department has research and educational connections with the State University of New York at Buffalo (SUNY), including the Center for Computational Research; the new Center of Excellence in Bioinformatics; the Hauptman-Woodward Institute, with its worldwide reputation in x-ray crystallography.   Students are also encouraged to participate in research and summer internships as part of their undergraduate experience.
