The biology major emphasizes a curriculum centered on active learning and hands-on experience. Students work closely with faculty members in a variety of classroom and real-world settings.

The Canisius Advantage
Our faculty have expertise in areas such as physiology, neurobiology, immunology, biochemistry, genetics, ecology, and animal behavior. Our biology faculty are research active regularly involve our students in cutting edge projects. Biology students also have the opportunity to participate in research at Western New York’s many hospitals and research institutions. Projects are as varied as doing research at Roswell Park Cancer Institute and studying how orca whales communicate at Marineland in Niagara Falls, Ontario.

Our minors and special programs include cell and molecular biology, neuroscience, environmental biology, animal behavior and zoo biology. Along with the major, they offer solid preparation for future education and careers in the biological or health-related sciences. Biology is also at the core of bioinformatics, an exciting field that is transforming the way biological data is analyzed using information technology.

The strength of our program is reflected in the success of our students. Our graduates hold diverse positions in labs, schools, and hospitals and many seek advanced degrees from graduate and professional schools, including medical and dental schools. Recent biology majors were selected for competitive summer research programs, research grants, and student presentation awards. Biology alumna Roseanne C. Schuster ’07 is the recipient of a prestigious J. William Fulbright Scholarship. Click here to learn about her research.
