Hands-on experience is central to the Canisius Biology program. Students have access to state-of-the art instruments for both course work and research. Additionally, students are encouraged to participate in research with faculty or to work with professionals at other local research institutions. Both teaching assistantships and internships as research trainees are available to qualified applicants. These opportunities help develop additional skills not normally offered in undergraduate courses, and help the student apply knowledge acquired in coursework to real-world situations.

Zoo biology students design a mini-zoo on campus each year.  The Amazon rainforest exhibit "Tropical Trek: From Dusk ‘til Dawn in the Amazon" was created in fall 2007 and housed animals on loan from the Buffalo Zoo including a Six-Banded Armadillo, a Prehensile-Tail Porcupine and a Douracouli Night Monkey.  To see photos of the project, click here.
