Canisius students have access to animals and caretakers at the Buffalo Zoo, the third oldest zoological institution in the country. They interview the zoo's veternarians to learn about zoo-based medicine, tour the zoo's kitchens to study the animal's diets and meet with curators to discuss the zoo's educational programs.
An intensive study of zoo exhibitry is conducted during visits to five national zoos in five days: Pennsylvania's Erie Zoo, Ohio's Toledo Zoo, Michigan's Detroit Zoo and Chicago's Lincoln Park and Brookfield zoos.
Student's build their own minature zoos using a small tank and some gravel and then incorporate the lessons they learn from this exercise to create a substantial working zoo on campus. One such exhibit featured Australian birds, mammals and reptiles borrowed from the Buffalo Zoo.
