There are seven courses required for the Canisius College Zoo Biology Minor:
BIOPSY 350 Zoo Biology
This course concentrates on aspects of genetics, physiology, and nutrition relevant to captive animal husbandry. Topics include the practice of managing Species Survival Plans within the worldwide zoo community.
BIO 109 NutritionThis course focuses on how food intake influences health, behavior and reproduction.
BIOPSY 315 Comparative Animal Behavior with associated laboratoryThis course includes habitat design projects, and exercises concentrating on the behavior of birds at the Buffalo Zoo.
BIOPSY 316 Social Organization of Mammals with associated laboratoryThis course includes a number of day-long observations at nearby zoos and aquaria.
BIOPSY 325 Reproductive BiopsychologyThis course has components focused on aspects of animal reproduction relevant to the management of captive animal breeding.
PSY498A Practicum: Buffalo ZooPSY498A Practicum: Aquarium of Niagara
(Practica at comparable out-of-town institutions may be substituted.)
Each course can be taken independently of the others, and in any order. Interested students usually begin with whichever course best fits their schedules. Most of the courses are offered only every other year, so interested students should plan their course selections accordingly.
