In cooperation with NYSERDA, Ecology & Environment is working with Canisius College on a "Green Campus" approach -- a practical method for colleges and universities, commercial buildings, hospitals, hotels, schools and school districts to address their environmental sustainability issues in a manner that is specific to their own operations.

This project consists of three primary components:

  • Mission statement/policy development
  • Technical analysis and development of recommendations
  • Awareness education
  • A spreadsheet containing the Energy Conservation Measures (ECM) data is also under development.
As an environmentally conscientious campus, the Canisius community has already implemented programs and events such as Recycling Committees and supply purchasing changes and upgrades to the structure of academic and residential buildings.  Canisius and Ecology & Environment are also developing a College Energy Use Policy.

The purpose of the awareness program is to:

  • Educate the college community about energy consumption in relation to C3E goals
  • Encourage faculty, staff and students to participate in specific efforts that will help achieve those goals.

The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has estimated that 60-70% less energy would be used by computer users enabling the "sleep mode" option on their computers. This could ultimately save enough electricity each year to power Vermont, New Hampshire and Maine, cut electric bills by $2 billion and reduce carbon dioxide emissions by the equivalent of five million cars.
