In an effort to support the goals of the Canisius College Conserves Energy program, we ask that you review and implement the following standards of operation established by the Canisius College Campus Energy Policy:
I. Heating and Cooling Thermostat Settings
The Facilities Management Department will adjust the thermostats throughout the campus to the following settings:
Occupied Periods
Heating 70 degrees
Cooling 74 degrees
Unoccupied Periods
Heating 60 degrees
Cooling 80 degrees
*Estimated annual energy savings: $98,045
- Enable sleep mode on all personal computer monitors.
- Use of personal computer "screen saver" programs is discouraged.
- Personal computers should be turned off when not in use for 30 minutes or longer, including overnights and weekends.
*Estimated annual energy savings: $17,000III. Lighting
- Use of fluorescent or compact fluorescent bulbs in place of incandescent bulbs is recommended.
- All room lights should be off when a room is not in use.
- Maximize the use of natural lighting in classrooms and offices
- Use of halogen torchiere lamps is strongly discouraged, both for high energy consumption and fire hazard reasons.
- In rooms equipped with zoned or partial light switching, utilize switching to minimize unnecessary use of artificial light in areas not in use.
*Estimated annual energy savings: $65,000IV. Office Equipment
- Turn off copiers, printers and other office equipment during evenings and weekends.
- The purchase Energy StarŪ approved equipment is recommended for all new equipment.
*Estimated annual energy savings: $12,750
Implementation of these standards will save approximately $192,795 annually and greatly reduce consumption.
Electricity consumption savings: 1,521,070 kWh/yr
Gas consumption savings: 64520 ccf/yr
Carbon dioxide emissions reduction: 1,529 tons/yr
