conserve in student housing

Do you live on-campus?  Wondering what you can do to help Canisius conserve energy?  Here are some quick tips on how you can SAVE energy!

In your room/apartment

  • Turn off lights when you leave a room for more than one minute.
  • Turn off appliances such as fans, radios and TVs when you leave a room.
  • Enable sleep mode or turn off computer monitor and printer when not in use. (See the Power Save Features link in the upper right corner.)
  • Use power strips (they save energy) but turn equipment on and off individually.
  • Replace desk lights with compact fluorescent light (CFL) bulbs.  CFL bulbs use 75 percent less energy and last 10-13 times longer than standard light bulbs.
  • To prevent energy loss (heat or air conditioning), keep doors and windows closed and seal drafty areas.
  • Set your thermostat no higher than 65–68 degrees in the winter and no lower than 55-60 in the summer.
  • If you are leaving your room/apartment for an extended vacation during the winter months, set your thermostat no lower than 57-60 degrees to conserve energy and prevent the pipes from freezing while you are away.
In your bathroom

  • Turn off water while brushing your teeth or washing your face.  Use one-half gallon instead of ten!
  • Take shorter showers or use water saving showerheads.  A five minute shower can use 30 gallons of water!
  • Do not flush garbage or other items that could be placed in normal trash containers.  Each flush uses five to seven gallons of water!
  • Turn off faucets completely, and promptly report and/or repair leaks.
  • Place faucet lever in the cold position when using small amounts of water; placing the lever in the hot position uses energy to heat water, even through it never reaches the faucet.
In your kitchen

  • Use a dishpan to wash your dishes and turn off water while washing dishes.  Use one gallon instead of 10!
  • Rinse all of your dishes at the same time, instead of one-by-one!
  • Turn off faucets completely, and promptly report and/or repair leaks.
  • Place faucet lever in the cold position when using small amounts of water; placing the lever in the hot position uses energy to heat water, even through it never reaches the faucet.
Other Good Habits

  • Carpool with friends or co-workers, take the bus or metro or ride your bike.
  • Carry a reusable water bottle.
  • Reduce, reuse, recycle and buy recycled products!
  • Send E-mail as opposed to using paper mail.
  • Read E-mails on-screen as opposed to printing them out.
  • Avoid disposable plates, cups and flatware when eating "on the go."
  • Dry your clothes on a clothesline – skip the dryer!
  • Read your Residence Life Handbook for policies on recycling and trash disposal in student housing facilities.
