Community Service Internship
Campus Ministry at Canisius College
Canisius for Buffalo Service Interns work as student liaisons between a particular community partner agency in our Canisius for Buffalo Program and the Canisius College community. Through the Canisius for Buffalo program, a Community Service Intern assists members of the Canisius College community live up to the Jesuit philosophy of becoming women and men with and for others. Direct community service enhances and enriches the Canisius educational experience; it also helps students develop valuable relationships, career, leadership, and social skills. Current Community Service Internship placements are AIDS/HIV ministry, shelters/homelessness/food programs, refugees, mentoring, senior citizens, education and tutoring.
Responsibilities
- Serve at a Canisius for Buffalo community partner site doing direct community service.
- Act as the student liaison between Canisius students and a specific community partner agency, serving as an advocate on campus for that partner’s needs and activities.
- Recruit and orient students, student clubs and organizations and assist them with discernment, placement, and transportation to the community partner agency.
- Incorporate and plan reflection sessions for student .
- Coordinate one-time events, as needed, for students and agencies (holiday parties, social gatherings, invite the community partner’s population to campus for an event, e.g., an athletic event, a concert, host a study hall, college for a day, etc.)
- Participate in regular supervisory meetings with a campus minister, participate in team meetings with other service interns, and other sessions as needed.
- Act as a positive representative for all Campus Ministry activities.
- Time Commitment: 6-8 hours per week
Job Qualifications
- Commitment to serving those in need, especially the materially poor.
- Commitment to service as a positive force for social change.
- Sensitivity to the themes of spirituality, service, and social justice within Catholic Social Teaching.
- Comfortable with leading students in reflecting on their service experiences and helping students make connections between service experiences and social justice.
- Strong communication and community-building skills.
- Energy, creativity, ambition, and a sense of humor.
- May not be an RA or have a job that interferes with training.
- Must maintain a 2.5 GPA.
Eligibility
All students who will be sophomores, juniors, or seniors for the 2011-2012 academic year are eligible to apply
Applicants must be in good academic standing and have a history of upholdingCanisius community standards
Compensation: Stipend or tuition waiver of $1800 per year.

Timeline
Application deadline: Friday, March 11, 2011;
Decisions & Notification: mid April, 2011.
Students may apply for more than one internship. Students may hold only one campus ministry internship at a time. Students may apply for a second year if desired. Students must be full time students at Canisius and be at least in their second year at Canisius during the year of internship.
