January 2010
This is a two week winter break immersion trip into Southern India. After a long flight and a day to re-coup, students travel an hour outside of Chennai to a boarding high school for Dalit, or “Untouchable,” children.
We live and interact with these children for 5 days through sports, crafts, language classes, cooking and music. We also have the chance to learn about women’s sewing guilds.
Afterwards, we board a train for Bangalore to explore the India countryside and learn about a street ministry with the poor called OASIS. We return to Chennai and Loyola University, a Jesuit College, to end our trip with 5 days of lectures and tours focusing on the rich and unique confluence of Islam, Hinduism and Christianity through India.
The language barriers, rural setting and intense subject matter make this trip very intense!
Applications for the 2010 team will be available in January.
