A residence for people living with HIV/AIDS. Benedict House provides their residents with many opportunities for growth and support through their Resident Services, Case Management, and Cognitive Services programs. As an intern at Benedict house, it is my job to organize activities with the residents, which vary from arts and crafts to card games to outings (such as bowling or Canisius sporting events). One of the most enriching parts of the experience at this service site is getting to know the residents for who they are, beyond the fact that they have HIV or AIDS, and to interact with them on a personal level. You can also eat dinner with the staff and residents, as their dinner time is 5:00 pm. If you are interested in coming to Benedict House and participating in an activity or getting to know the residents, please contact me. |

This program reaches out to children from the Buffalo Public Schools in grades 2-6 who come from poor and recently immigrated families. The students are served a home cooked meal, have personal one-on-one tutoring sessions and time that may include physical activity or time for a creative learning activity. If you are interested in community service and experiencing how this program is helping and transforming the lives of these children, we would be happy to speak with you. It does require a commitment of once per week for the semester. |

Little Portion Friary 1305 Main Street Little Portion Friary is a homeless shelter for men and women over the age of eighteen. Guests usually stay around three weeks depending on their circumstances. I have been blessed with the opportunity to have worked within the shelter since my freshman year and it has become not only part of my life but, my heart as well. LPF vision statement is for all homeless individuals to find and live in affordable housing as contributing members of society with hope for their future and respect for themselves and others. I am proud to say that LPF is a non-profit organization and receive no government funding; it has been run on donations, faith, and volunteers for over twenty years. |

The Lutheran Church Home (LCH) is an Assisted Living Facility on East Delevan. It is located about five minutes from Canisius. At the home, Canisius students spend time with the residents doing a variety of activities. Each day there is something new to participate in. Some of the activities that take place are ladder golf, review of the daily news, playing scrabble, movies, bingo, exercising, and basically socializing with the residents. There are also excursions we take around Buffalo. If you are interested in doing community service at the Lutheran Church Home, please do not hesitate to contact me. |

St. Monica’s Scholars Program for Young Women is a Nativity/Miguel Middle School located on Parkside in Buffalo. The school offers an alternative option for families of meager circumstance who wish to provide their children with a Catholic education, otherwise unable to afford non-public education. The faculty, staff, and volunteers at St. Monica's are dedicated to making an impact in the lives of fifth through eight grade girls, providing them with the tools necessary to succeed in high school, college, and beyond. As a service intern at St. Monica's, I work in the after-school program and tutor students who seek further development with reading and writing skills. Volunteers are needed to assist with activities in the afternoons as well as plan for other events which will support a sense of community between Canisius and St. Monica's. If you are looking for service opportunities, you are welcome to come to St. Monica's with me on Monday and Wednesday afternoons. Please feel free to contact me via email, kerstenc@canisius.edu. |
