Alumni Service and Immersion Program to New Orleans

In August of 2005, Hurricane Katrina struck Mississippi and New Orleans causing catastrophic damage and killing over one thousand people. Even after all these years, about 25 percent of the homes in New Orleans are still unoccupied and need restoration.
Each May since 2007, a group of Canisius alumni and staff have journeyed to New Orleans for a week of service and solidarity with the people who are still recovering from the tragedy of Katrina. The program includes direct community service and cultural immersion.
In addition to our community service, our program involves connecting with the people we are helping and listening to their experiences. Participants have learned about others and themselves and have emerged with a profound sense of gratitude. People often find they encounter God most directly through service to others.
Our two community partners are: St. Bernard Project and Harry Tompson Center.
Cost: All participants are responsible for their own transportation to New Orleans plus $200. Lodging and most meals are included.
