What is VIP?

The Valuables Identification Program is a free program which enables you to engrave your valuable property with your drivers license number, create an inventory list of your property and obtain a photographic record of your property. This will assist you and law enforcement in the identification and recovery of your property in the unlikely event it is stolen and also make your property less desirable to thieves. Contrary to popular opinion, not all items are marked with serial numbers. Those that are, are usually equipped with stickers which are easy to remove or tamper with.

How VIP works

Electric engraving pens are available for loan at the public safety office. To borrow one of the pens simply present your Canisius I.D. to the public safety dispatcher and explain that you would like to borrow an engraving pen. The dispatcher will log the transaction and return your I.D. along with the engraving tool and instructions. When you are finished engraving your property, return the engraver to the public safety office.

VIP inventory

Once you have finished engraving your property it is important that you complete an inventory list which includes the type of item, description, model number, manufacturer provided serial number and whether the time is VIP marked. Keep this list with your important documents.

Photo enhanced VIP inventory

Following your participation in the VIP program and completion of an inventory list, it is recommended that you have a photographic record of your valuables. To accomplish this, contact the Public safety Crime Prevention Unit and schedule an appointment to have a crime prevention officer come to your residence to digitally photograph your valuables. Once the items are photographed the officer will provide you with the images of your property to keep with your important records.

Protecting textbooks

Because of their high resale value, textbooks are a popular target of opportunistic thieves. To assist you in the protection and recovery of stolen textbooks, write your name on several pages of the book. Keep a record of the pages that you mark and store it with your important papers.

Suggested tips for protecting your property

  • Be sure your door is locked when you leave your room and/or suite regardless of the time you plan to be gone. Lock it even if your roommates are sleeping.
  • Never leave computers, iPods, money, purses, wallets, jewelry, etc. lying out. Find an inconspicuous place in your room where you can place these items. Jewelry boxes and desk or dresser drawers make bad locations.
  • Don't leave notes on your door announcing that you are not at home.
  • Do not allow "door to door" salesmen to enter your room. Canisius College regulations do not permit salesmen to solicit on college property. Contact public safety if you are solicited by one.
  • Keep an accurate inventory of your valuable property by recording serial numbers, taking photos, and keeping the purchase receipts of these items. This may aid in the recovery if lost or stolen and also provide proof of purchase for any insurance claim you submit.
  • If you reside in a college residence or at private off-campus location, check your parent's homeowners or renter's insurance coverage to see if your property is covered while you are living away from home. If is isn't, renters insurance can usually be purchased for a nominal fee.
