Michael Noonan
At Canisius, I contribute to programs focused on Animal Behavior, Zoo Biology and Behavioral Neuroscience.

I am particularly proud of a new program at Canisius College devoted specifically to promoting the conservation of wildlife called Canisius Ambassadors for Conservation (CAC). The primary objective of this project is to develop a group of Canisius students into educators and advocates of conservation through in-depth and on-site studies of certain animal species. The students then return to WNY to serve as ambassadors by conveying their knowledge and passion about animals to others. This program is about promoting conservation by stimulating community-wide interest stemming from affection for certain animals species. Simultaneously, this program directly benefits the students, the college and our three local zoological institutions.

My research is focused on the behavior of marine mammals (whales and seals). My students and I study two main topics: one is the cognitive processes that these animals use when solving problems, the other is the development of social communication in newborn whales.
