Step I: Prerequisites:

a. Baccalaureate degree with a satisfactory concentration of 36 semester hours of college-level credit in one of the liberal arts or sciences. [For Canadians. a "half course" is worth three semester hours, and a "full course" is worth six semester hours.]

b. Evidence of successful completion of college-level credit in each of the following: English, mathematics, science and social studies.4

c. Evidence of successful college-level study or its equivalent in a language other than English.4

Step IV: State examinations:
The following tests may be taken before, during or after student teaching, but both tests must be passed before application is made for certification. Liberal Arts and Sciences Test LAST Assessment of Teaching Skills ­ Written ATS-W [The results of these tests are sent directly to the State Education Department and to the person who took them. Canisius also receives the results, but not until much later. Since the college needs proof that both tests have been passed before it sends a letter of completion, Canadian students must bring the original report form (not a copy) to the Education office (Science 014) where a departmental copy will be made.]

Note: At this point all the requirements for New York State provisional certification have been met. An application "blue form", which is available in Science 014, should be submitted to the Canisius College School of Education office. [For Canadian students, Canisius College will notify the Ontario College of Teachers that all New York State requirements have been met except for U.S. citizenship. Each student must make his/her own application to the Ontario College of Teachers for a letter of eligibility.]

Permanent certification

The requirements are as follows:

a. A functionally related master's degree described above

b. Two years of full-time teaching in grades pre-K-6

c. Passing scores on the Content Specialty Test CST in

elementary education and on the Assessment of Teaching Skills - Performance ATS-P.

Note: Other changes in the certification process may come into effect after the publication of this catalog. Students should consult a department adviser for further information.

Certification process for graduate students in secondary education

Step I: Prerequisites:

a. Baccalaureate degree with sufficient credits in one or more of these areas:

b. Biology 36 credit hours of science, including at least 18 in biology Business 36 credit hours [Ontario: Business education accounting; Business education marketing and merchandising; Business education ­computers]

Chemistry 36 credit hours of science, including at least 18 in chemistry

English 36 credit hours

French 36 credit hours [Ontario: French-second language]

German 36 credit hours

Mathematics 36 credit hours, including at least six in calculus

Physics 36 credit hours of science, including at least 18 in physics

Social 36 credit hours [Ontario: history, economics,

Studies political science, geography, individual and society]

Spanish 36 credit hours

[In Business and Social Studies, the Ontario certification areas are more specific than those in New York State. To insure that the applicant has adequate subject-area preparation in these areas, Canisius College requires that the 36-hour total include at least 18 hours in the specific area in which certification is sought i.e., accounting, marketing/merchandising, computers, history, economics, political science, geography, sociology.]

c. Evidence of successful college-level study or its equivalent in a language other than English. This requirement does not apply to students in business education at the present time.8

Step IV: State examinations:

Permanent Certification
The requirements are as follows:

a. A functionally related master's degree (described above)

b. Two years of full-time teaching at the secondary level (7-12)

e. Passing scores on the appropriate Content Specialty Test f. (CST) and on the Assessment of Teaching Skills - Performance (ATS-P). A separate CST is available for each of the New York certification areas listed above.

Note: Other changes in the certification process may come into effect after the publication of this catalog. Students should consult a department adviser for further information.


4 Three credit hours are required; six credits are recommended [For Canadian students, there are two special cautions regarding this prerequisite: {1} If the requirement is being met by courses taken at a community college, the transcript must indicate the number of credits received, not just the number of hours. {2} OAC courses are acceptable in meeting this requirement only if they were taken before the student enrolled in the institution from which he/she received a bachelor's degree.]

5 If the college determines that the student has sufficient background in this area, EDU 511or a course from Step V may be substituted.

6In place of EDU 509 and/or EDU 514 a student, under advisement, may take two appropriate upper-level undergraduate courses in the subject area in which he/she is certified or intends to become certified.

7 Students should note that EDU 511 or equivalent is a prerequisite for EDU 615. If EDU 511 is needed, the total number of credits increases from 54 to 57.
