The masters of science in telecommunications management MTM is an application-oriented graduate program designed to serve the educational needs of the rapidly growing telecommunications and data communications datacom sectors. The curriculum consists of 36 credit hours: 12 credit hours in MBA courses and 24 credit hours in specialized telecom and datacom courses. The telecom/datacom courses are taught during the fall and spring semesters only, with the exception of the online course that is also offered in summer. Two telecom/datacom courses six credit hours are taught each semester so that students can complete the sequence in two years. All courses are offered in the evenings or online.

The MTM curriculum is designed for individuals of any background who want to prepare for careers as telecommunications or data communications network professionals and for in-service professionals and managers who need to update their knowledge of current and future telecommunications products and services. The objective of the program is to provide graduates with:

  • an in-depth technical understanding of the telecom, datacom and computer networks and telecommunications systems, both wired and wireless;
  • an applied understanding of industrial and residential customers' use of telecom/datacom equipment and devices;
  • the ability to analyze data for support customer relationship management CRM;
  • project management and negotiation skills.

The MTM program should be of interest to network managers, computer security analysts, government agencies, telecommunications specialists, corporate managers, call centers, entrepreneurs and any professional who may be affected by the latest developments in computer networks, telecom and datacom.

Admission
Applicants must meet the admission requirements described on page 27. They may use either the Graduate Management Admission Test GMAT or the Graduate Record Examination GRE to meet the testing requirement. The GMAT or GRE requirement is waived for applicants holding a doctorial degree.

MBA courses 12 credit hours
Waivers of one or more MBA courses are possible for those with an MBA. All MBA courses are waived for anyone with an MBA received within five years from an A.A.C.S.B. accredited program.

Transfer credits
Graduate course work completed by a student at an AACSB accredited college or university before joining the Canisius College program may be accepted for transfer credit. Students desiring transfer credit should submit a written request to the associate dean for evaluation. No transfer credit will be awarded for courses with grades below "B" (3.0 on a 4.0 scale).

Transfer students must complete at least 15 credit hours at Canisius College. Students who wish to take graduate course work at another institution must have prior written permission from the associate dean. Other transfer credits may be allowed on a case-by-case basis.

Language requirement
There is no language requirement for the master of science program in telecommunications management. However, all classes are conducted only in English.

Completion of degree
It is expected that graduate work will be completed within two to four years. A student who has not taken a course within a twelve-month period may be removed from the program. Extensions to these time limits may be granted by petition to the associate dean.

Courses 2002-2004

MTM 600 Digital Network Security (3 credits)
An introduction to methods for defending against cyber threats and damaging use of computer networks. It provides an understanding of the potential legal problems and information security risks triggered by email and Internet connectivity and how to defend against exposure to financial loss and employer liability.

MTM 610 Voice Networks (3 credits)
Design and management of voice networks. Managing large voice networks; analyzing existing network designs. Techniques used to analyze telecommunications data networks. Performance evaluation of existing and proposed networks under different hardware configurations or operating constraints.

MTM 611 Data Networks (3 credits)
Analysis and management of data networks. Capstone project designed to demonstrate student's full provisioning cycle understanding of data networks from a management perspective. Project allows student to design, analyze, implement, troubleshoot and interface with end user. Prerequisite: MTM 610.

MTM 620 Customer Relationship Management (CRM) (3 credits)
An introduction to the data analytic field of CRM. Students are engaged in a hands-on, interactive course, including Oracle database develop-ment to support CRM, marketing applications, sales force automation, customer service and support applications.

MTM 630 Project Management (3 credits)
In-depth coverage of project management techniques and processes. Includes MS Project 2000.

MTM 666 Negotiation (1.5 credits)
Theory, processes and techniques of negotiation as practiced in variety of settings. Designed to be relevant to broad spectrum of negotiation problems faced by managers and professionals in telecommunications industry.

MTM 670 Telecom/Datacom Special Topic (independent study) (1.5 credits)
In-depth study of a specific telecom or datacom topic of interest to each individual MTM student and approved by the MTM director.

MTM 680 Telecom/Datacom Management Seminar (3 credits)
Current topics presented by experts in the local community. Topics include telecom/datacom services and devices, call center management, wireless networks, cyber security, broadband, VPN, XML, WEP, P2P and streaming media.

MTM 700 Telecom/Datacom Strategic Management (3 credits)
Students are required to work in teams to analyze case studies, identify business needs, develop alternative solutions and present their final recommendation. Area businesses participate in this course. Prerequisites: All MBA and 600 level MTM courses.
