life after graduation

As a Canisius College graduate in chemistry or biochemistry you can expect to achieve success like the hundreds of other graduates who have completed our program.

For the past 13 years (1993-2006), all of our Chemistry and Biochemistry majors who have applied to graduate school or medical school have been accepted.

Of our most recent graduates, 30 percent received full scholarships to pursue PhD programs in chemistry or biochemistry (at Cornell University, Yale University, University of Pennsylvania and other major universities); 30 percent entered medical school (including prestigious MD/PhD programs); 12 percent entered pharmacy or dental school; 10 percent accepted jobs in industry; and 18 percent pursued other careers or advanced degrees, including: biomedical engineering, MBA, law, education and military service.

Canisius alumni who majored in chemistry or biochemistry are successful in a wide range of careers. They are FBI forensic scientists and CIA agents; CEOs and founders of biotechnology firms; chief executives of international pharmaceutical companies; professors of chemistry, medicine, pharmacy, law and business at Ivy League and other major universities; patent attorneys and federal judges; science writers; environmental scientists; engineers in the aerospace, nuclear and software design industries; military officers and USAF pilots; cardiologists, neurologists and other medical specialists (including an orthopedic surgeon for an NFL team); and the inventor of photodynamic cancer treatments.  Even a former president of the American Chemical Society was a Canisius chemistry graduate.
