The Communication Studies Department at Canisius College in Buffalo, NY, offers a Bachelor of Science degree in Digital Media Arts.
A highly marketable program to a new student population, the degree blends technical, critical and design elements. It combines a broad-based liberal arts core curriculum with intensive instruction in the use of digital tools to create and design multimedia content.
Intended to complement the department's existing program as well as a number of other programs at the college, the new degree offers students an undergraduate degree for the new millennium.
Providing cutting-edge approaches to designing, creating, editing and supporting digital media and multimedia productions, students graduating with a B.S. degree in Digital Media Arts will be situated to take advantage of the expanding job opportunities in graphic design, video production, electronic publishing, on-line information services, e-commerce, content development for CDs and DVDs, and the like. Such opportunities exist both within and outside of the specifically digital media industries.

Because graduates will have design, technical and critical skills, they will be suited to address the challenges faced by corporations, small businesses, government agencies, as well as non-profit, cultural and educational institutions. Graduates also will better understand how digital media are transforming the ways in which we communicate and interact.
The degree was initiated with a $250,000 federal grant (Title III, U.S. Education Department), and features three fulltime faculty, a multimedia specialist, four computer labs, new software and new hardware.
