Campus Radio Goes to the Net
The student radio station, for decades a “home” for many Communication Studies majors, has gone digital. The Wire, as students now call what since the 1970s had been WCCG, is aired on Live365.com, an Internet portal, for which the station pays a monthly fee.
Station co-manager and Communication Studies major Patrick Engrasser, ’09, commented that the main thing about the move is the net expands the station’s reach. “We have gone from an on-campus only station to one that can reach around the world.” He hopes alumni will become listeners.
The Wire features “mixed genres,” Engrasser said. This consists of mostly modern and classic rock, with some hip hop. Sports talk/call-ins and movie reviews round out the format. Engrasser said he hopes to add campus news as well.
Jamie O’Neil, an assistant professor of digital media arts in the Communication Studies Department, who is the radio club’s advisor, noted that slots are still available for students who want to have their own radio show—no experience necessary.
One can catch the Wire at: http://dma.canisius.edu/~wire/ and click on Listen via Live 365.
