Process for Submission and Application of Courses for Core DesignationThe Core Curriculum is a multi-disciplinary program of study required of all students attending Canisius College. The Core goals and requirements express the path by which students will demonstrate their understanding of the knowledge, values, and skills that characterize an Ignatian education. Applications for Core credit should be made to the CCC with the endorsement of departments and will be taken electronically. The materials required for the submission process are detailed below for each component of the Core Curriculum.

The application is made by the department chair (or designate) in whose program the course will be taught; the designate may be the faculty member teaching the FYS 101 course. A separate submission must be made for each different FYS 101 course; only one submission need be made if multiple sections of the same FYS 101 are being offered.
The department chair (or designate) will be prompted to provide the following information:
- Title of the course (the special theme or topic that will organize the seminar).
- Confirmation that the course has departmental approval.
- Confirmation that this section of FYS 101 will address both Core goals of Basic Writing-intensive and Basic Information Literacy (Please click “Skills Expectations” on the left for further information).
- A brief description or list of how students taking this section of FYS 101 will meet the student learning objectives associated with each Core goal (Please click here to view the student learning objectives). This description or list should comprise the activities, skills, and knowledges (related to Core goals only) that students will be expected to master by virtue of students taking this section of FYS 101.

application (Microsoft Word), and submit to the Director of the Core Curriculum, by e-mail at
lawrenc7@canisius.edu. Deadline for fall semesters is February 15; Deadline for spring semesters is October 15.
Top of sectionTop of pageCross-Disciplinary Attributes (Diversity, Ethics, Global Awareness, Justice, Advanced Writing-intensive, Oral Communication) The application is an electronic process. The application is made by the department chair (or designate) in whose program the course will be taught; the designate may be the faculty member teaching the course to be designated with attributes. A separate submission must be made for each different course.
The department chair (or designate) will be prompted to provide the following information:
- Title and departmental number of the course.
- Confirmation that the course has departmental approval.
- Indication of which attribute or attributes the course should be designated with. A course may carry as many as two attributes, but only one may be knowledge (Diversity, Ethics, Global Awareness, Justice) and one may be skill (Advanced Writing-intensive, Oral Communication).
- A brief description or list of how students taking this course will meet the student learning objectives associated with the Core goal with which the course will be designated (Please click here to view the student learning objectives of each attribute). This description or list should comprise the activities, skills, and knowledges (related to Core goals only) that students will be expected to master by virtue of students taking this course.

A separate submission must be made for each different Core Capstone. Capstones in major programs can be designated as Core Capstones as long as Core goals are addressed and assessed.
The department chair (or designate) will be prompted to provide the following information:
- Confirmation that the Core Capstone has departmental approval.
- Confirmation that the Core Capstone will expect demonstration of the Core goals of writing, oral communication, and information literary skills.
- Confirmation that the Core Capstone addresses the Core goal of Public Service.
- Indication of which Field of Knowledge the Core Capstone addresses.
- Indication of which Knowledge Attribute(s) the Core Capstone addresses.
- A brief description or list of how students taking this Core Capstone will demonstrate the student learning objectives associated with the Core goals addressed (Please click here to view the student learning objectives of each Core goal). This description or list should comprise the activities, skills, and knowledges (related to Core goals only) that students will be expected to master by virtue of students taking this Core Capstone.

For Breadth of Knowledge:Fields-designated CoursesPrograms will submit a list of courses that meet the specific leanring objective associated with a given Field. Once reviewed, the Committee for the Core Curriculum will send this list on to the Registrar and other appropriate administrative offices.
The department chair (or designate) will provide the following information:
- A list of courses that departments assert enable students to meet the objective of the specified Field of Knowledge (Please click here for the student learning objective of each Field). A separate list should be submitted for each Field in which courses will be offered by the department.
- A rationale for determining which departmental courses meet the student learning objective associated with the Field. This will be used by the Committee for the Core Curriculum when determining if courses offered by departments that fall outside or cross the boundaries of principal department(s) of any Field met the student leaning objective associated with the Field.
- A description of how departments will direct students to the courses where the student learning objective of the field will be met.

lawrenc7@canisius.edu. The deadline for submission is January 16, 2009. Submissions are taken at any time and reviewed as received during the regular academic year. Departments will be asked to update there lists each semester.

What Happens After the Materials are Submitted?
- The Director of the Core Curriculum will send weekly acknowledgements to department chairs of information received in list and electronic form. This acknowledgement will include the date upon which the Committee for the Core Curriculum will review the submissions and applications.
- Once the Committee for the Core Curriculum has reviewed submissions and applications, one of three letters will be sent:
- A letter approving the submission or application
- A letter requesting additional information to assist the CCC in its process (when information is missing or unclear).
- A letter providing advice and resources to assist the applicant in making a future successful submission (department chairs, CTE and others may be invited to assist).
- Approved courses will be forwarded to the Registrar for inclusion in Banner and coded so that students may search for them.
- Approved courses will be marked to facilitate future assessment of Core goals.
