The Canisius College Committee on the Status of Women was established in 1995. Members are elected to represent women in the areas of administration, faculty and staff. Terms of service are two years. Annual elections are structured to give the committee a blend of current and new members.

Mission and Goals

Mission
Consistent with the mission of Canisius College, the Committee on the Status of Women will foster a sense of community among the College's students and staff through personal interaction marked by courtesy, respect, openness and integrity. The Committee will acknowledge and affirm women as a resource that adds value to the College. It will advocate recognition of the individual contributions of women to the College and encourage their growth and development.

Goals and Objectives
The CSW is committed to the welfare of women who are members of the administrative, faculty and administrative support staff. It exists:

  • To assure economic equity for these women.
    • Identify salary inequities between men and women in similar faculty and administrator positions with similar responsibilities, experience, and length of service and correct gender inequities in the College's promotion patterns. Establish a baseline upon which improvement can be measured.
    • Undertake a full and comprehensive analysis of salary levels for full and part-time secretarial/technical staff members with the goal of moving toward equity with salary levels for comparable positions at similar institutions.

  • To facilitate communication about issues affecting their professional well-being.
    • Make recommendations for grievance procedures that will assure fair treatment of women.
    • Disseminate information on legislation and policies, on institutional concerns and opportunities, and on events or issues in the external community that impact women and/or their families.

  • To maximize their contributions to the College.
    • Develop annual workshops in the areas of gender issues, including legal responsibilities, communication skills, administrative management techniques, and leadership skills/styles.
    • Advocate equitable distribution of professional development opportunities so that women can enhance their skills and advance in their careers.

  • To promote a climate of mutual respect and integrity between the men and women of Canisius College.
    • Strengthen the presence of women professionals who can serve as role models for women students, recruit more women full-time tenure track faculty to raise the proportion of women faculty, and require departments that have no women faculty to establish a priority to hire women.
    • Establish ongoing programs to acknowledge commitment and contribution of women in secretarial and technical positions.
    • Encourage annual workshops for the Vice-Presidents, Deans, Department Chairs, and Program Directors in the following areas: gender issues (including legal responsibilities), interpersonal skills, administrative management techniques, and leadership skills/styles to promote a more hospitable environment for women.
    • Encourage a decentralized Human Resource Management approach to supervision of secretarial/technical staff so that immediate supervisors would assume responsibility for supervision and policy decisions.
    • Identify and strive to eliminate condescension, role stereotyping, hostility, denial of status and authority and double standards to alleviate and/or avoid the problem of a hostile workplace. Survey a sampling of women, on a regular basis, to measure perceptions of the climate on campus.
