Welcome to The Center for Teaching Excellence Homepage

Faculty development has been ongoing at Canisius College since 1992.  Cast in the Jesuit tradition, the Center for Teaching Excellence assists faculty -- and through them our students and the community we share -- in the pursuit of excellence in teaching and learning, development of the "whole person" and service to others.

Thank you for visiting our site.  We welcome your suggestions, invite your questions, and we are ready to help you make a difference in the world.

CTE Teaching Teas are relaxed, informal events. These teas allow professors from across the campus to get together to talk about some of the main elements of our jobs: teaching and learning.  Come to brag about ideas that worked and commiserate with others over ideas that still seem like they should have worked.

Join us for these triweekly gatherings and share your ideas, issues, and thoughts. RSVPs are never necessary, and  you can come and go from the conversation as you need.

This Spring semester the focus will be on engaging and educating students in our classrooms.

Grant Opportunity:

Innovative Teaching Incentive Grant: Fall 2012
Deadline: February 24, 2012

The Project:

The CTE will fund up to five $300 grants to faculty who will create new approaches to teaching their courses in ways that optimize the flexible learning spaces begin constructed in the new Science Hall.  Grantees will work as a Faculty Learning Community through the Spring semester and summer to recast a course (or course) to adapt to the enhanced learning environments that will be furnished with flexible room design and multiple technologies.

To Apply:

Send a proposal that includes:

  • A plan for how you expect to use the space to enhance student collaboration and active learning.
  • Intended use of the advanced technology (for room #1053) and/or the flexible seating with more conventional technology (Level 3 classroom, #1028).
  • Rationale for your plan.
  • An initial plan for assessing student learning and the impact of the course redesign.
  • Current course syllabus.

Selection will be based on:

  • Level of innovation and rationale for the plan.
  • The potential for future Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL) publication.
  • The potential for the project to be adaptable to other instructors in order to expand the use of active student engagement across campus.
