Economics is widely considered to be the philosophy of business. It deals with the guiding principles underlying business such as making decisions under uncertainty or find the best solution when choices are constrained. Economists weigh every decision in terms of possible alternative choices. They look at the fundamentals that drive the problem and so have a greater tendency to see solutions that are outside of the box.
In general, economics provides a logical, ordered way of looking at choices ranging from the kinds of decisions we make in our personal lives to why and how the national and global economies work. The Economics major at Canisius emphasizes that logical, ordered way of thinking in topics ranging from the economics of marriage to international finance.
Economics provides students with a great foundation, especially those who are uncertain about what they want to do in business and do not want to make a commitment to a specific functional area. The Economics major is for those who are interested in the workings of economy. It is the most general of all business programs at Canisius and it has the widest scope – students can take courses to enter the business world right away with their Bachelor of Science degree.
Some of the career paths students can take include:
- Economist
- Consultant
- Cost Analyst
- International Trade Specialist
- Market Research Analyst
- Statistician
Another option is to select courses leading to a Bachelor of Arts degree for preparation of further education and advanced degrees in areas such as law or even health care.
Overall, the program is flexible, especially for Canisius students who switch to the Economics major from other business degree programs after their freshman year. Students are encouraged to write a major paper that provides the opportunity to put together the pieces of everything they have learned. It also benefits students in their job searches and helps builds a competitive resume. See more of what our students have done
