program_overview

One of the secrets of a successful economy is a well developed and well run financial sector. The existence of money and other financial assets facilitates the allocation of economic resources where they can more profitably be used.  If we really want to understand how our economy works, it is necessary for us to understand how the use of financial assets leads to the better use of real assets.  Understanding how the financial sector works and how it is related to the real sector is why we study finance.

The finance major at Canisius instills an understanding of the financial structures of organizations and the basis of financial decision-making.  Students learn how monetary resources are obtained and allocated and how investments are handled.  They also receive training in the use of spreadsheets, databases and statistical software.  There are two tracks of study:
  • Investments - featuring our year-long Golden Griffin Fund course
  • Corporate finance - ending with a capstone experience focusing on case studies
The Golden Griffin Fund – in this highly unique program, students actually work in a financial markets lab equipped to simulate a Wall Street trading room, complete with a Bloomberg terminal. Soliciting new investors is a key component of the course, which also teaches how to evaluate, buy and sell securities; deal with diversification issues; perform financial reporting; and complete tax forms. Current investors in the 5300,000 fund include Canisius College, M&T Bank and Merchants Mutual Insurance Company.  To learn more about it, click here.
