How long will it take me to finish my degree?
- Major Requirements
- Almost all majors in the School of Education and Human Services require more than 120 credit hours that will require students to take six courses in some semesters to complete the degree in four years. Other circumstances may prolong this timetable including: needing to retake a course, changing major, or withdrawing from courses. Transfer students will need to develop long term plan with their advisor depending on how many courses are transferred in that meet degree requirements. A meeting with your advisor is imperative to determine your path to a degree, which may or may not include going beyond four years.
- Use Griff Audit and the Major Requirements page to assist you in figuring out how long your degree will take you.
When should I contact the Associate Dean?
- Only after you have met with an advisor and/or department chair first about the following:
o Exception questions related to the core.
o Study Abroad approval.
o Permission to take a course at another college.
o Grade grievance.
o Late withdrawal requests (after 12 weeks).
What do I need to do to take courses at another college?
- Complete the “Request to Take Course(s) at Another School” form
- Get courses pre-approved with the following signatures:
Core / Free Electives - Associate Dean ONLY
Academic Concentration - Department Chair AND Associate Dean
Pedagogical Courses - Department Chair AND Associate Dean
- When courses are completed, it is your responsibility to have your transcripts forwarded to the Registrar’s Office
Can I be a dual major in the School of Education?
- Yes. To be a dual major a candidate not only has to complete his/her teacher education program and academic concentration, but also must complete requirements for a full-major in one of the Liberal Arts and Sciences. Generally, candidates in Adolescence Education have the best chance of securing a dual major because they take more courses in their academic concentration than do Childhood Education candidates. Normally, Adolescence candidates need just a few more courses to actually complete a second major.
Is Dual Certification the same thing as a Dual Major?
- No! Canisius College offers several majors in the School of Education and Human Services. Each major contains a teacher education program / level as well as a concentration.
- For example:
o Childhood Education + Concentration = 1 major, 1 certification
o Childhood / Early Childhood Education + Concentration = 1 major, dual certification
o Physical Education = 1 major, 1 certification
o Physical Education / Health Education = 1 major, dual certification
Who’s my advisor?
- All entering Freshmen are assigned an academic advisor. They will assist each student in the preparation of his/her initial course registration. School of Education candidates are assigned a major-specific advisor during their second year. Adolescence education majors require two advisors - one for their major and one for their concentration. The administrative associate within the departments will assign each student their personal advisor. If you are unsure who your advisor is you can contact your department.
